Trouble connecting via WiFi to Canon Pixma MG6120 (Solved)
« on: April 07, 2017, 11:28:58 am »
So I am trying to set up this MG6120 Canon printer via WiFi. Before coming here to post yet another topic I looked for drivers, but could only locate ones from CanonAsia(MG6170) and CanonEurope(MG6140), which supposedly work with the MG6120. I also searched the forums for help and found one about dependencies and launchpadlibrarian ( https://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php/topic,3169.msg31254.html#msg31254 ). Is that link posted there applicable to my printer also? Is there an order that I should do things in (i.e. install printerdeb, scannerdeb, and then run launchpad library)?

You need to install libtiff first because the drivers depend on it. Then install the printer driver debs for your architecture (32-bit or 64-bit).

Okay so I looked up libtiff in Software Manager, but there are a lot of them. Which one should I install?

Did the one in the thread you linked to not work? (you were referring to it as launchpad librarian, which was the site libtiff was hosted on)

I just wasn't sure that is what you were talking about. The post I linked is over a year old, is there an updated version? Will I get updates for the one in the link?

I don't know any of those answers, sorry. You might as well try, it could work. If not, post the specifics of any errors that occurred.

Okay, what about through the Software Manager? Do you know which one I should choose from to install it via that?

I thought that link was there because it wasn't available in the repos, so in that case just install it from the link.

I'll mark solved. libtiff is in the Software Manager of Respin.. According to my Software Manager I already have libtiff5 installed, so I will try it without the link first. I will update you tomorrow by direct message. Thanks for your help.

We have a PPA for Canon printer/scanner drivers

Open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mark-pcnetspec/canon-printer
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install cnijfilter-mg6100series scangearmp-mg6100series
Then add the printer via:-
menu > System Tools > Printers

PCNetSpec, I ran your commands, but am still unable to see/connect to the printer wirelessly. Also, I am running 64 bit Respin and I noticed that the ppa supplied was i386. Doubt that was an issue, but I put it out there for your information. The printer setup is asking for a host to which I put in the IP address from the printed information page, but I still can't get it to print a test page. Thoughts?

Does the printer work if connected via a USB cable ?

PCNetSpec, I ran commands you provided, searched for the wireless printer with it's IP address, went through the rest of the printer setup (which allowed me to choose Canon printer drivers and I did), but when I got to print a test page the printer wouldn't print. In the end, I got it working via the steps below. So, I don't know if I did something incorrectly after installing the drivers you had me run from the terminal, or if I should have just skipped installing the drivers from the printer setup. In any case, it is up and running now. I don't know if I will be able to scan documents yet, but it prints. I probably messed something up in the setup, as I have no doubt you provided me the correct tools to get it working. I want to thank you again for all your time and assistance. I sent you a personal message, which you can ignore. Once again, you are Awesome, and I appreciate all your help:)

So this is what I did to get it working (for future reference and for NooBs like me):
1. Menu > System Tools > Printers
2. In printer Window > Add
3. Under select device, Expanded Network Printer
4. Clicked on Find Network Printer
5. In the box to the right, next to Host: I typed in the IP address of the printer (which can be found by printing the printer information page, or if it is connected to the network logging into the router and finding the IP address under devices).
6. After it found the printer I went through the rest of the setup in which I chose my device, by name (Canon), and then got the drivers via the model (MG6100), and printing a test page. And it worked.
