Why don't you just install the proprietary driver?

Had you upgraded the kernel and graphics stack via the HWE previously too ?

Hi

No - this is in a fresh clean install which is why it's puzzling.  You can see from the Mesa thread that it was working on a previous incarnation where I had messed around with nVidia drivers etc etc and a new 4.10 kernel but it did not show "Failed"

Taken from that thread

Butt that's my point, how do you know mesa 17 works with the 16.04 kernel and graphics stack if your previous install had the newer ones from the HWE before you upgraded to mesa 17 ?

Well you could try updating to the never 4.8 kernel and upgraded graphics stack via the HWE with:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-16.04 xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04

Apologies - I missed this for some reason...  I could except there is a problem with the 4.8 kernel for me and that is, it's failure to see all my HD drives :(

So I will stick with 4.4 or I have to move onto 4.10 as 4.9 can be a bit flakey too.  So not to worry.  I will close this thread and just install nVidia for now :)

Thank You.

You're still not understanding me .. its not just the kernel upgrade that comes with the HWE, you also get the updated graphics stack.

So my suggestion was to install the HWE, then if necessary upgrade the kernel to 4.10

As it stands you have the graphics drivers from 16.04, the 4.10 kernel, and mesa from 17.04 .. to me it makes sense to minimise the variation so to have the graphics drivers from 16.10 which you get with the HWE.

I'd personally do it before moving everything around .. just in case.

To recap..

fresh install of P7 and nouveau shows as failed - so upgraded to nVidia then saw your post so uninstall nVidia and now not failed for nouveau - install mesa 17 and all working

So installing nVidia drivers and then uninstalling nVidia does something that nouveau now no longer fails.
