Just wondering if there's the possibility to reinstall Peppermint4 and thereafter update to P5?

Anyone with experience about it?

In the past whenever I've see that from a LiveUSB stick, I've just given it a while and it's continued.

I have no idea why some machines decide they need to look in the CD/DVD drive for so long (?) .. another option is to disconnect the optical drive during installation, then reconnect it afterwards.
Another option would be to just boot from a live CD, and give the machine what it is looking for...   ;)

In my experience with some older laptops, I found they just don't like booting from usb sticks for some odd reason, but a cd or dvd boots just fine....  ;)

PCNetSpec and rjm65 I guess your advices were destined to yarn, right?

Because I tried just the first attempt with a pen drive and thereafter only with a CD.

But at least in my case, I'm afraid, as long as this bug with firewire management exists, there won't be much left to do.

After lots of trial and error, it froze on this.
Code: [Select]
[85.494233] sony_laptop:Sony Notebook Control Driver v0.6
[85.497539] input:Sony Vaio Keys as /devices/LNXSYSTEM:00/device:00/PNP0A08:00/device:13/SNY5001:00/input/input9
[85.497747] input:Sony Vaio Jogdial as /devices/LNXSYSTEM:00/device:00/PNP0A08:00/device:13/SNY5001:00/input/input10
I tried disabling sony_laptop but it kept reappearing.

The laptop's DVD drive won't read disks so I used a USB DVD drive.  :(

So adding

sony-laptop.blacklist=yes
and/or
blacklist=sony-laptop

as a kernel boot parameter makes no difference ?

How about

acpi=off

? .. that's not ideal, I just want to know if it works.

When I tried adding only sony-laptop.blacklist=yes and blacklist=sony-laptop, it hanged here.
Code: [Select]
*Starting configure network device security                  [OK]
*Starting configure network device                  [OK]

When I tried only acpi=off
Code: [Select]
line 7: cant open /dev/sr0: No medium found

And when I tried using the first one and recovery nomodeset
Code: [Select]
sony_laptop: unknown parameter 'blacklist' ignored
sony_laptop:Sony Notebook Control Driver v0.6
input:Sony Vaio Keys as /devices/LNXSYSTEM:00/device:00/PNP0A08:00/device:13/SNY5001:00/input/input9
input:Sony Vaio Jogdial as /devices/LNXSYSTEM:00/device:00/PNP0A08:00/device:13/SNY5001:00/input/input10

Try just

acpi=off

then when it gets to

cant open /dev/sr0: No medium found

leave it for about 20mins .. that line will probably repeat about 10 times .. then it may continue to boot.

If it does, don't install yet .. I just want to know if it does boot (eventually).

It did not boot. It  kept repeating until it gave up.   :(

You know where you're adding the kernel boot parameters after hitting the "Tab" key ?

Somewhere in that white writing will be:-

file=/cdrom/preseed/peppermint.seed

that changing that part of the text to:-

live-media-path=/casper/

and appending ignore_uuid as a boot parameter

so the line also ends with:-

acpi=off  ignore_uuid

I kept repeating line 7 still.

I read this and saw that he had to edit GRUB to fix his problem.

But how and what do I edit?

So you want to try adding "acpi=off" as a kernel boot parameter ?

to the LiveCD/LiveUSB ?

[EDIT]

Am I missing something here .. I thought we'd already tried acpi=off further up the page  :-\
