Linux Kernels available in Peppermint 8 [Solved]
« on: June 04, 2017, 10:27:27 am »
Hi

Within the update manager is a facility to install kernals via the Linux Kernels update Manager.

it is showing that the 4.10 kernel is available with 0-14, 0-19, 0-20 and 21 variations.   By choosing one of these, will they be automatically maintained and updated as security alerts come out ?  The same as 4.4 did in P7 and 4.8 will in P8

Regards Zeb...

NO not yet.

Eventually Peppermint 8 (not 7) will automagically roll to the 4.10 kernel series from zesty anyway when Ubuntu update the HWE, then that kernel will get updates .. but currently NO, and installing the standalone 4.10 kernel may interfere with the rolling HWE kernel upgrades.

I've been using the Ubu 4.10 signed kernels, from the Canonical Kernel Team repo, for awhile now, on P7 & P8.  They work a treat -- UEFI, Secure Boot, regular HWE & security upgrades -- the whole shebang.

The funny thing is, 4.10 has already reached EOLso I suspect Canonical is borrowing heavily from 4.11, but that's just an educated guess.  They can call it anything they like.  I haven't got time to do forensics, right now ...

EDIT
Cancel that thought !  I just realized Canonical has posted 4.11 [Artful] in their Kernel Team repo.  :)

I only mention it, because this thread is posted in the Advanced sub.

As Mark says, don't expect any official Peppermint support, if one decides to go the experimental route.   8)

I'm running '22'.   ;)

Just saying ...

Woke up to a Canonical Kernel Team update, when I booted my 'Road Warrior 2'.   8)

As a POC [regular security updates provided via the repo, etc.], here's a screenie ...

And, a friendly 'knudge, knudge, wink, wink' concerning the Cantarell font ...

That's because you' switched to HWE Edge .. PM8 will get it when it's moves from hwe-16.04-edge to hwe-16.04

And what would you have me do with Canterell ? .. I can't switch people to it on installed/configured systems .. that would require me changing configs in their home folder, and we don't do that.

Imagine how pissed off you'd be if I suddenly switched you to something other than Canterell, undoing your customisations ;)
