New member with printer question (Solved)
« on: June 25, 2014, 01:40:19 pm »
Hi!  I am a return user of Linux.  Long ago I used SuSe and ran a home server for my web pages.  The dark forces seduced me to return to Windows and I haven't used Linus for a decade.

So I am now awed by the changes and cannot remember much of that past life!   :-\

My question revolves around printers.  I have an older Samsung laser that won't work with Peppermint 4.   The printer isn't worth saving so I want to know what low cost laser printer I should buy that will plug and play with Peppermint 4 or 5.  Planning the upgrade to 5 soon.

Here's the catch - I don't want to ever run any HP product.

Thanks for your help!!   :D

Oddly, Samsung now provide pretty darn good Linux drivers for their laser printers ;)

Wow!  I prefer HP printers for Linux but to each his own.

Check THIS out.  You can browse by brand or model number and see how it works with Linux.  I'm told that several of the Brother models work well and aren't too expensive.  Good luck with your search.

There ARE Linux printer drivers for that on the Samsung website
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/ML-2525/XAA

What makes you think it doesn't work with Linux ?

OK - I'm anything but a Linux Geek.

I installed the printer from the menu - system tools, printers.

When I told the 'puter to print a test page I got a cycling of the print cartridge and no printed output.  Several re-trys got the same results.

Now - the  printer isn't worth spending any time getting it working.  Some time back I had some cheap paper in it and it tried to feed 100 pages all at once and bent everything in the feed section of the printer.  Since then, in Windoz, I have had to single feed all paper.  That has gotten old!   :'(

So I am in the market for a new, lower end, B&W laser printer and want one that gets along with Peppermint 4/5 well.

I might as well get this new adventure off to the best possible start!   :)

MAC - thanks for the link -

I found an interesting printer - Samsung M2835DW.  Good price on Amazon = $113.

Do you folks think this one will work seamlessly?

CLP-325W & SCX-4200

according to this http://www.printerland.co.uk/Samsung-Xpress-M2835DW-P133416.aspx  the M2825DW will work in Linux, additionally it looks identical to my CLP-325W which I can vouch for being a good solid printer

It may be worth having a look at the HP printers as mac suggested they generally have the best Linux support

Good luck

Worth mentioning that Epson have Linux support for at least their inkjet printers.

I now have the  M2825DW and it doesn't work either!   :'( :'(

I'm not having a good time with this venture.  I've tried PM4 and PM5 with the computer recognizing the printer is there but not finding a driver for it.

Open  a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run these commands in sequence:
(probably best to copy/paste these commands into the terminal, then run them one at a time)
Code: [Select]
sudo bash -c 'echo "deb http://www.bchemnet.com/suldr/ debian extra" >> /etc/apt/sources.list'enter your password when prompted and hit enter .. then run:
Code: [Select]
sudo wget -O - http://www.bchemnet.com/suldr/suldr.gpg | sudo apt-key add -then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt updatethen:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt install suld-driver-4.01.17When the terminal turns blue (offering to add your username to the lp group) .. hit the "Space Bar" (so there's a (*) next to your name .. then hit the "Tab" key so <OK> is highlighted red, then hit "Enter".

Once that finishes, Now try adding your printer again through

menu > System Tools > Printers

If prompted, choose this driver:-

Samsung > M262X 282X > Samsung M262X 282X Series [en] (Recommended)

IT WORKED!

Man - I felt like I was communicating in a totally foreign language to another world.   I couldn't believe all the text streaming across the terminal window.   :) ;D

But it printed a great test page!!!   :D
