Peppermint 5 Ubuntu 16.04.2 upgrade notice (solved)
« on: March 04, 2017, 01:04:58 pm »
Hi, I am still using peppermint 5 on a couple old laptops. I don't wish to change, at least as long as security updates continue. It looks like I am good for about another another 2 years based on Trusty Tahr's end of life?

The software updater has been telling me that system is up to date but Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS is available and giving me an upgrade option. I've been ignoring this and assuming it's not really a feasible upgrade option, anyway. I figured it was some sort of glitch related to the Ubuntu base of peppermint.

If I am mistaken and this "upgrade" thing can work, what would I be upgrading to?

Peppermint 7 is based on Ubuntu 16.04x and would require a complete new install as Peppermint is not rolling release.  Peppermint 5 (14.04x) should receive upstream support until April 2019 however that might not include all packages.  For more information run
Code: [Select]
ubuntu-support-status

cheers

Thanks for confirming.

Updates to packages shouldn't be much of an issue, these macines are just used for streaming to couple TVs using Chrome.

Good choice !

I had to replace '5' on one of my machines, the other day.  It wasn't cutting it any more, for my application(s).

I'm still running '6' on this Eee PC netboook.  '6' is still okay, with the latest HWE stack:

Code: [Select]
vindsl@Gozer ~ $ ubuntu-support-status
Support status summary of 'Gozer':

You have 122 packages (9.4%) supported until May 2017 (3y)
You have 1015 packages (78.2%) supported until May 2019 (5y)
You have 4 packages (0.3%) supported until December 2017 (9m)

You have 0 packages (0.0%) that can not/no-longer be downloaded
You have 157 packages (12.1%) that are unsupported

Your Hardware Enablement Stack (HWE) is supported until April 2019.

Peppermint 7 Respin is the prudent move, as you ascertained.   ;)

I got somewhat similar output from that command. But does this:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/1574670

mean it's fixed for all, or only for Yakkety?

I would recommend upgrading to Peppermint 7 but if you keep Peppermint 5 updated/upgraded you should be fine for another couple of years.  If you begin to experience issues then upgrade to P7.

No, it isn't "fixed" across the board.  The only issue, as I understand it, is that it doesn't take community support into account, hence the name "ubuntu-support-status."
When you run the command a couple of options appear at the bottom which you can use for a bit more detailed info.

cheers

I really wouldn't choose the "Ubuntu Upgrade" option unless you're feeling particularly brave.

In fact I'd turn the option off.....

menu > Preferences > Software & Updates > Updates (tab)

and change:-

Notify me of a new Ubuntu version: Never

Another way to disable the option is to run:
Code: [Select]
sudo gedit /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades
and change:-

Prompt=lts

to

Prompt=never

then save the file

Thanks for the instructions for turning off that notification.

Someday when I am ready to replace peppermint 5 anyway, I could do that brave thing just to see what happens ;).

It broke the heck outa everything the last time I tried, but then again it more often than not breaks Ubuntu too .. at least it does the desktop version, Ubuntu server upgrades without issue probably because it's a simpler beast without all the GUI stuff.

Follow-up, I found that I don't have that option in software and updates (also the weird bug where boxes can't be checked):

I used the terminal and got warnings copied below, but seems to have worked. The file opened, I edited it and then saved. Used file manager to navigate to that file and opened it and the "never" is there.:

You can safely ignore those 2 particular warnings from gedit whenever you see them.

Thanks again.

Since it now turns out that we'll be passing this laptop on soon, it'll be good to no longer have that upgrade option appear.

The new owners will also receive a selection of 8 Linux distros on DVD (including P7) to choose from should they want to upgrade.

Just an opportunity to get rid of some old DVDs that I have laying around.

But seriously, I will be letting them know of the great and patient support for Peppermint that I got from you and others when I was new to Linux 3-1/2 years ago.   8)

Just pulling your leg jsb .. if you don't give them something to compare it to, how are they going to know it's the best ? :) ;D :D :))
