I installed Linux Mint Cinnamon 18 from a different thumb drive on this machine and everything went well. But I have never been successful with Lubuntu or any of its derivatives. Can this be a Live USB problem?

That's exactly what I thought too .. everything looks fine :-\

Can you define the issue for us now ?

If immediately after the BIOS POST screen you hit the "Shift" key, are you presented with the GRUB menu ?

Unlikely if the LiveUSB is booting .. it may now no longer be a bootloader issue, it may be a kernel or graphics driver issue.

Yes. Even though Peppermint is now the only OS installed on my system, I am shown the GRUB menu on every boot regardless of whether I press the Shift key after the BIOS screen or not.  :(

So now it only goes to a flashing underscore when you hit enter to boot ?

And are you saying it then goes to a busybox prompt if left at the flashing underscore ?

From the busybox prompt, what is the output from:
Code: [Select]
ls -a /dev/sda1

What happens if you boot the

Peppermint GNU/Linux, with Linux 4.4.0-51-generic (recovery mode)

option .. does it still drop you to busybox ?

I don't suppose you still have Mint 18 installed so we can see the contents of its /boot/grub/grub.cfg for comparison ?

Have you ever tried the original spin of Peppermint 7 ?

Nope. I just installed Peppermint over it. Mint is too heavy for my system.

Sorry but I am not sure what you mean by the original spin of Peppermint 7. Before Peppermint 7, I was trying to install Lubuntu and got the same BusyBox problem. When I installed Linux Mint though, everything worked fine out of the box.
