System takes too much time to shutdown/reboot
« on: February 27, 2017, 08:24:23 am »
Hello,
Generally my system takes up 1 to 3 sec to shutdown completly, but i'm having this "little" issue where my system takes a momment to shotdown/reboot, it doesn't happen frequently (1/5 of the time) but i'm curious why does this happen?
i noticed this issue quite a while ago (few days after installing it)  but it didn't really bother me so i tend to forget about it.
i didn't install somuch softwares, and the ones i use are generally used by a lot of people (Eclipse IDE, VirtualBox, XAMPP, Cairo-Dock...etc)

so why is this happening?  ???

When the shutdown hangs for a while .. how long ? (roughly 2 minutes ?)

When it hangs, hit the "Esc" key .. are there any messages onscreen ?

It's possible you still have a background process that's running when this happens.  If you do, then it may take a moment or two for the system to kill the process so that it can safely shut down.  That would explain the delay.  That or there's something else going on.

Too OverPowered  :(
on a more serious note, it takes maybe from 1-3 min to shutdown, it happened to me this morning while i was running only virtual box with 2 systems opened (Windows Server 2003 and WIndows 7 for some precision)  and nothing more, i wanted to power off my laptop right after closing and saving the 2 systems"s states and virtualbox.
if it happens again i'll try to hit the ESC key to see what happens, as usual thanks for the assistance guys :)

What were you running in the other instances?  Was it Virtual Box also, or different things?  Yes, I realize you may not remember, but I'm trying to get a more complete idea of what is going on here.

i only run these programs :
Firefox,Eclipse,VirtualBox,Cisco packet tracer (but stoped some time ago),Libre Office, Wine (Microsoft office 2010 but not that much, and this issue showed up before using Wine),Brackets (text editor),VLC (sometimes)
it's usually a mix of theese programs but no too much (generally not consuming more than 30%-50% RAM

Reporting :
Just assisted a reboot that took a relatively long moment (20-30 Sec, btw the progress bar added on the Respin release is very helpful, on the old version there were no progress bar so i taught it was just a crash/bug and shutdown my Laptop with the power button) and pressed the ESC and i saw a bunch of lines in a terminal-like window all finishing by a  green "[ok]" and it seems that the actions that takes the most time to be performed are the "stop target network or something like that" (didn't wrote it sorry xD ), they get finished (by the green ok thing but they take a longer momment, other actions just finish in a blink of an eye).

Tu sum it up : the "stop target netwrok" action takes a relatively long time to be executed (i think there were 2-3 of them and each one taking about 8-10 sec to be performed.

That'll be the Samba shares hanging in systemd then. If you manually unmounted them it would help but it's not a proper solution really.

I've had the same problem, usually happens after a kernel upgrade or network upgrade.

Are you mounting any network shares ?

never used the Samba software and i didn't touch anything on my system since the new install of the respin version (i only installed some apps like eclipse, brackets,LIbreoffice,Xampp and Java).
just in case, When i use USB Devices (Usb stick and my smartphone) i sometimes unplug them directly without unmounting them before (bad habbit i took when using Win7).
I've had the same problem, usually happens after a kernel upgrade or network upgrade.
Maybe this could be be the cause, i did all the system updates yesterday.

Hmm. I think this MIGHT have happened to me a couple of times when I wasn't mounting any Samba volumes, but I can't swear to that.
