[SOLVED] How do I ADD new window themes (not GTKs)
« on: June 24, 2014, 10:08:30 pm »
I'm more familiar with openbox setups, but since Peppermint 5 doesn't use openbox, how can I add new themes? (Not GTKs, I want to keep the default GTK.) I tried placing themes in /user/share/themes, but they are not recognized in the Peppermint Control Center/Window Manager tab.

I read the User's Guide, Customizing the Desktop, but it doesn't say anything about adding themes.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Nevermind...

The themes I tried lacked support for xfwm4.

Which themes were they?  If you post a picture of them, maybe somebody can match a xfwm4 theme to it for you.

Thanks for the thought, dsplayname, but it isn't that crucial. I just wanted to test a couple of other themes because I was having problems with the default Peppermint Lite theme. Thankfully, the Orion-Peppermint theme from Peppermint 4 came with Peppermint 5 and I've reverted back to that one.

What problems were you having?  Window themes are easy to edit/fix, especially XFWM4.

The corner handles of windows on the Peppermint Lite theme are almost non-existent, and the side handles aren't much better. I looked through the config files to see if I could increase the sizes, but didn't have much luck figuring it out. I'm more familiar with editing OB themes. This is my first OS with xfwm4 themes. If Peppermint 4 had wfwm4 themes, I never noticed because the Orion-Peppermint theme worked fine for me then, so I'm more than content having it as my default theme now on Peppermint 5.

For the sake of general reference: Yes, Peppermint Four used Xfwm4.

I think this issue might be caused by the single-pixel window borders.  When there's only 1 pixel to grab, that's all there is to grab.   I'd offer the alternative of right-clicking on the title bar, and using the "resize" option, but it sounds like more effort than it's worth just to grab a window border.     I can put together a thicker bordered theme if you'd like though.

Just curious: Why not just hold Alt and right click anywhere in the window?

Alt+Right-click doesn't work for me.

I either resize from the bottom right corner, which has a MUCH larger "grab" area.

or hit Alt+F8 which sets the current window to resize mode.

I'm sure I once found a workaround for this that made the edge easier to grab .. I'll see if I can rediscover it.

You're right about the 1 pixel borders, and thanks for the offer to tweak them, but I'm going to keep using Orion-Peppermint theme.

Alt+Right-click doesn't work for me.

Same with me as PCNetSpec - doesn't work for me either.

I appreciate all the help from you folks, but I'm fine with the Orion-Peppermint theme. The Peppermint team did a great job with this release, and I just wanted to give the new graphic designs a fair run.

You might want to apply this fix to the Orion-Peppermint theme .. otherwise right-clciking files/folder when the windows is at the bottom of the screen (so the right clcik contenxt menu opens with the pointer over a menu item) may cause the context menu item underneath the mouse to be automatically selected

run:
Code: [Select]
gksudo gedit /usr/share/themes/Orion-Peppermint/gtk-2.0/gtkrc
find the line that reads:-
Code: [Select]
	GtkMenu::vertical-padding = 0
and change it to:-
Code: [Select]
	GtkMenu::vertical-padding = 3
SAVE the file .. then log off/on (or reboot)
