« on: February 16, 2017, 07:20:36 am »

Hi agiyorks,
Does the printer not work at all or does it just not work with LibreOffice?
Please run the following command in your terminal and post the results in your reply...
Code: [Select]
sudo lshw -C Printer

cheers

Hi Mac, thank you for trying to help. The printer seems to be recognized. Just tried printing using Pluma, but the actual 'Print' button is greyed out.

Code: [Select]
sudo lshw -C Printer
[sudo] password for agiyorks:

Okay, open pluma, type a few characters and press Ctrl + p.  Does your printer show up?

I guess not, if it's name is supposed to show, It says 'Print to file' and as mentioned the print button is inaccessible.

Okay, I'm guessing you haven't tried to install the printer (i.e. drivers) is that correct?

No, haven't installed drivers. Sorry, wondered about that, but was unsure. Where do I find drivers, please

Thank you for the link.

I must be doing something wrong. I downloaded the drivers and had them opened with Archive Manager as prompted. Opened the amd64 deb file ( perhaps incorrectly) with the GDebi installer, then opened the Install.sh using a terminal. Selected correct USB option, put the printer on when prompted but the printer could not be seen. Then used the search for updates option, but got printer could not be found. All this after rebooting and several tries.

Where might I be going wrong?

Download the driver package and save it in your Downloads folder

Double click the deb.tar.gz file in the Downloads folder and it will display cnijfilter2-5.20-1-deb

Double click cnijfilter2-5.20-1-deb then packages then cnijfilter2-5.20-1_amd64.deb

The package installer will open and take care of dependencies then you can click on the Install Package button

Enter your password when prompted

Once installed, open menu > System Tools > Printers

If your printer shows up and works, great.  If not, use Add to install it.

NOTE: Have your Printer hooked up via cable and turned on.

Many thanks for your patient help Mac.

I had already followed all the steps you listed apart from trying the 'Add a printer' one which worked :) as my Canon printer then could be seen. Unfortunately I still must be doing something wrong as I cannot print using Pluma, nor LibreOffice writer :(
Any suggestions?

Okay, one more....

Open your browser and go to localhost:631
Click on Printers
find your printer and click on it (blue - left side)
find the Maintenance button and click on the down arrow and choose "Print Test Page"

If it doesn't print go to Administration
Under Printers click on the Add Printer button
Enter your name / password in the resulting authentication window and click Login
When the Add Printer page opens tic beside your printer's name and then Continue
On the resulting page enter a location ex: home then Continue
Select Make and Model on the next page and click the Add Printer button

The Set Printer Options page will open....ignore it and open Printers
Again, select your printer in blue (left), choose Maintenance and Print Test Page

THIS IS IMPORTANT: Keep your fingers crossed during the whole process!

EDIT: IF THAT DOESN'T WORK I have just one more thing to try...
Open your terminal and run...
Code: [Select]
 sudo apt install cups-backend-bjnp
Then try installing again.

ANOTHER EDIT:   Try PCNetSpec's approach (below) first....less complicated and more likely to actually work.  Still, though, keep them fingers crossed  :D

Or you could try the ones from my ppa

First go to menu > System Tools > Printers . and delete the printer you have already set up.

Uninstall the drivers you just added.
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove --purge cnijfilter2
now add my PPA:
Code: [Select]
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mark-pcnetspec/canon-printer
update your package cache:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
then install the drivers for the printer and scanner:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install cnijfilter-mp630series-32 scangearmp-mp630series-32
Now add the printer again in menu > System Tools > Printers .. and test.

My printer has stopped spitting out blank sheets of paper!! :)

Your solution worked PCNetSpec, thank you very much, I am now merrily printing away. Thanks too, Mac for your suggestions.
