Kodi Available on Peppermint 7
« on: February 05, 2017, 10:42:25 pm »
I'd go without light before Kodi .. hell, let the TV supply the light :)

Hell yeah, Kodi is the best thing since the invention of soft toilet paper  :))!!

Er...

How come nobody told me one can install Kodi in Peppermint 7 ?    :-\

Just ran across it, per chance ...

John, I couldn't do without Kodi on my Peppermint 7 machines.  When I was in hospital for 12 days last October.  Kodi saved me from jumping out of the 10th floor window :)).  The combination of Kodi and winding up flat earthers on YouTube, made my hospital stay very entertaining and acceptable  ;).

Man, this Kodi player is great, Andy !!!  It's a tinkerers delight.

For some reason, I got the impression that I was going to need a dedicated standalone device, like my Apple TV, Roku, or whatevs.

Ran across this article, last night, and I'm like, "Huh?"   :-\

Live n' learn, eh what ?

I know, it's hysterical.  This one is Eric Dubay, a yoga instructor and great scientific luminary  :-X.  If there was a Nobel Prize for stupidity, Dubay would be a strong candidate for one :))!!

Yeah, I say if your machine is up to the task.  Sling Kodi on it.  You're missing out on so much if you don't  ;).

This Kodi is great !  Doesn't even make this machine breathe hard.

I'm going to need to replace these dual 19" monitors with a couple 24's - I can see that already.  5:4 doesn't cut it on 16:9   ;D

I've been playing the movies on my Dell UltraWide, but I haven't run across any 21:9 movies on Kodi yet .

Oh, what a tangled web we weave ...

Jeez John, where have you been .. I'm amazed you've only just discovered KODI my mate ???

I take it you've loaded some addons or a "build" such as "The Beast" ?

If so, see you in a couple of months ;)

That sounds awesome.  Along with reinstalling Peppermint 7 on my Dell lat 6410 again.  I need to install openELEC 7.* on my Raspberry Pi2.  That's easy enough to do  ;).

Exactly !   I find videos to be very distracting, so I generally steer away from them.

Andy made an equally valid point.  Kodi distracted him from his plight to the point of saving his life - or, at least his sanity.

That said, discussions of Kodi here have sparked idle curiosity, but not to the level of buying a Raspberry Pi, or whatevs.

Put another way, I wanted to give Kodi a whirl, but wasn't tempted enough to invest in something I'll likely never use, e.g. another toy to sit in the closet, gathering dust.

I think my 'next steps' will be to install Kodi on my 'new' laptop (with HDMI output) and see how it works on my 55-inch HD TV.

Really, the only time I watch movies is when I'm too tired to keep my eyes open.  They put me to sleep.  Might as well be laying on the couch.

Basically, I'll repurpose my 'new' laptop to become a Kodi set-top-box.  Might give me a reason to occasionally boot into '10'  LoL !   :D

In that usage pattern it doesn't require you "repurpose" anything .. just install it on a laptop with an HDMI output, then use it for KODI only when you want.

But I'm telling you .. eventually you're going to have dedicated hardware, simply because it'll always be ON ;)
(I rarely "watch" TV either, but it's always on in the background)

KODI is not only about Movies .. you can get all your TV/Music/Youtube/etc. through it too .. erm, free if you want.

Is there a safe an reliable way to auto launch Kodi on startup in Peppermint? (as soon as you hit the desktop)

Yup .. if KODI is installed, open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
cp -v /usr/share/applications/kodi.desktop ~/.config/autostart/

In future, can you please start a new topic with a descriptive title for your questions rather than tag them onto the end of someone else's .. it'll mean they are easier to mark as solved if a solution is found, which in turn makes it easy for people with the same question to find a known working solution. .. TIA :)

The latest KODI won't work properly in PM7 or 8 because it insists on an upgrade to python-cryptography which doesn't seem to be available. Is there any way around this? I can't even use an older version of KODI because the addons I want to use seem broken in those.
