Try rebooting the router .. or wait for the lease to expire.

:o weirdness, router reboot didn't help, but moving the USB dongle to a different spot did.

;) and your instructions worked flawlessly once again... :-*

Even more happily, the wifi dongle works on its own after reboot without needing to be removed/reinserted

And our Good Liege @PCNetSpec will heave a huge sigh of relief knowing that the Realtek RTL8812AU chipset drivers worked flawlessly when installed directly from the repositories in the latest respin...

Well today's kernel update broke the wifi's Realtek drivers again... the log file tells me...

Code: [Select]
System 8812au: version magic '4.15.0-23-generic SMP mod_unload " should be "4.15.0-24-generic SMP mod_unload "

leading me to hunt for the file to change it... discovered all the drivers down in /usr /src

or would it be better to just uninstall and reinstall wifi drivers?

Code: [Select]
sudo apt remove --purge rtl8812au-dkms
sudo apt install rtl8812au-dkms

reboot, working fine now... much simpler than locating where that line of code was to be found...

 :(    :(    >:(

And now it's time once again to figure out what's going on with my wifi dongle with the Realtek RTL8812AU chipset. Y'all mind helping out this befuddled old cloudy brained trusted user?

When I follow thru with @PCNetSpec's original instructions I get:

The dongle used to spring to life before the flip to the 5.0 linux kernels... I have a feeling I need to delete some or all of these

and now I find:    >:(

Code: [Select]
spence@antex ~ $ sudo modprobe rtl8812au
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'rtl8812au': Device or resource busy

since migrating to that kernel I've had the dongle work for a bout 20 minutes 17 days ago. and it had been about 20 days before that since the move to 5.0 kernels. 5.0 kernel swith has also prevented me from moving back to an earlier kernel. I'm about to do a fresh install with Peppermint 10, but am loathe to abandon my large swath of SSBs that will need to be reinstalled.

I need a breather and am walking away from the computer... might even brave a retail outlet or two today...

no worries, I took my vitamin C, 15,000 mg so far today
