Do you need colour, or will "black & white / greyscale" do ?

My last printer was a Canon inkjet, bought in 2012 and used only a few times a year. Once the model starts getting a bit old and Ubuntu goes through a few more versions, Canon driver support drops off to nonexistent. I gave the printer away after realising it wasn't going to work in Peppermint 7.

Sorry, guys I was out of town yesterday, but when out of town, I was quite unexpectedly given a printer.  My friends had a spare one and gave it to me.  PCNetSpec, I do believe, to be on the safe side of things, I will need black and color inks.

:D The only thing I can really contribute is stay out of range of the Canons

Most (if not all) Canon and Epson inkjet printers use a 'fixed-head' design, e.g. when one replaces the ink 'cartridges', they're replacing the ink 'tanks' only, and not the spray heads.

There are pros n' cons to this design but, AFAIK  the heads stay active (and heated) the whole time the printer is turned on.  Personally, I think it's a piss-poor marketing model.  Planned obsolescence at its finest.  Plus, the manufacturer can boast about how cheap the ink is, because the heads aren't included during 'cartridge' replacement.

Of all the brands, the printer I was given is a Canon MX 340.  I now need to purchase ink and paper for it today.  Another storm is coming in tomorrow so this can't wait.  As you guys know, I know next to nothing about printers --except, of course, from what I've learned here.  This was a totally unexpected gift.  Canon printers have never been on my radar at all, but now I actually own one.  It needs to cleaned up, set up, and put to work.  What a surprise.  :o   Still, it will need to work with Peppermint 7 or I'll still be in a pinch.  Knock on wood. ;)

Hello PCNetSpec and murraymint,

I went out to purchase ink and paper.  I'm concerned that murraymint is correct here.  I never imagined that ink would cost nearly as much as the printer itself --a "special" price of $49.97.  Do you think this printer will probably work with Peppermint 7?  That's my biggest fear, because Peppermint 7 where all my documents are.  If we think there's a very good chance it will not,  I'll return the ink and buy one of those HP printers we spoke about earlier.  I know I'm never supposed to ever look a gift horse in the mouth, but the ink prices are truly shocking!  :o

And, PCNetSpec, thank you very much for the driver information and Ubuntu reference guide.  :)

Hi Perknh

That certainly is a special price I assume that's original Canon cartridges

I'm sure you can get them much cheaper than that
Have a look here
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PG510-Black-CL511-Colour-Ink-Cartridge-For-Canon-PIXMA-MX340-Inkjet-Printer-/331354938630?hash=item4d264b1d06:g:joEAAOSwEppUSgFf

Ok that's ebay.uk but I'm sure there are similar deals on ebay.com

I don't know the exchange rate between the £ and the $ (the way the £ is tanking it's hard to keep up) but I'd guess about $20

If you can keep your head while all around are losing theirs then you're not quite grasping the situation

Yes, that's right, they are original Canon cartridges.  And, thank you for the resource.  This thread is also inspiring Ink cartridge offers right here in Peppermint --though I love to get rid of that PITA Stephanie gal who supposedly lives 3 1/2 miles away from me.  She shows up too, above the inkfarm ads, and she refuses to be ignored.  Also, since mac became a Global Moderator, I'm getting lots of McDonald's free coupon offers too. ;)

Are you using Peppermint 7 32bit or 64bit ?

Then I'll test the drivers install properly.....

Okay...

Open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mark-pcnetspec/canon-printer
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install cnijfilter-mx340series-32 scangearmp-mx340series-32
That's the drivers loaded .. now add your printer in the normal way via:-

menu > System Tools > Printers

The scanner should already be available under:-

menu > Graphics > ScanGear

You'll also notice 2 other "Canon" menu items in the "Grahics" menu

Thank you, PCNetSpec, I installed the PPA, and, now, for the first time ever, I've been able to print the documents I have on our home computer which is running Peppermint 7.   mrs.perknh and I cannot thank you enough.  :)

And, to all the other participants within this thread.  Thank you also.  emegra, this will be the first and last time I'll ever buy proprietary ink for this printer.  Canon may make one hell of an impressive printer, but the prices for its ink are insane.  :o

Finally to my friends in Union, New Hampshire who are now buried in three feet of snow.  Thank you for the Canon MX340 printer.  It is working like a charm.  ;)

P.S.

mac, I'll now be able to print out some coupons for some Big Macs.  ;D

You're welcome perknh :)

FYI, those same instructions should work for Peppermint 5/6/7 (both 32bit and 64bit).
(at least they will now I've also added the "trusty" packages to the PPA)

perknh, what printer were you planning to buy before you were given the Canon?

The only reason I ask is that an Epson all-in-one has just died on us here.

Hi murraymint,

Sorry to hear about your Epson printer.  I've now learned firsthand how frustrating searching for a printer can be.  That said, my understanding is that, generally speaking, you can't go wrong purchasing an HP printer --but it will be the printer's drivers that will be the keys to its success when running it with Peppermint.  PCNetSpec, had helped me along with this resource:

https://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php/topic,4976.msg49667.html#msg49667

But, murraymint, before you purchase a printer at a store, or online, pass its model number by PCNetSpec to be on the safer side of things.  He'll tell you whether or not it ought to work with Peppermint. You want it to be able to work with the version of Peppermint you're using, that's for sure.  Keep the purchase price of ink into consideration too.  Ink sure can be expensive.  Plan on having to buy your ink online.  If given the choice between two equally good printers, go with the one that has the less expensive ink.

Best of luck with your printer search.

perknh

P.S.

If you believe as I do in dollar voting, our dollars and pounds probably should be going to HP right now.  They support us so we support them --dollar voting! ;)

P.S.S.

If by chance, however, you come across an old Canon MX340.  I can guarantee that this will work for you.  PCNetSpec set this printer up to work flawlessly like charm, but I've heard that Canon doesn't make these printers any more.   But, if do can find an Canon MX340, grab it --but grab it knowing that the price of ink is going to be high. (My friends told me this as they gave me the printer, but I was still shocked at the price of ink --even after being forewarned.  :o )

I still think that your best bet is to find an HP printer and then pass the model number by PCNetSpec in order to stay on the safe side of things.
