I have wanted to get Linux for over a decade but, sadly it has never been easy enough to use.  I have an old Pavilion DV9 and my version of win10 became corrupt.  So it was time to dip my toe in again to see if the water was warm enough yet.  I tried lots of distro's this time round and Peppermint was the only one not to crash, to install first time and to update properly.  Plus is has a good selection of programmes in the store.  My laptop boots up (and turns off) much quicker than with win10.  The screen is clear and I love the configurable desktop.  I am trying to think of all of the programmes that I "need" from Win10 but I really can't think of anything where a version isn't available (except onedrive, but i am considering switching to dropbox so not a big issue). 

I am a happy chappy 

Welcome aboard the peppermintOS train kloos... I hopped on in 2010 and have barely looked back.... I dual booted for a while because of genealogy software, but then elected to push all of that onto the www... tired of winblows maintenance.

Hello from Fred in Tennessee!  I’m recently retired and have a 10 year old Dell Vostro laptop with 2 gb Ram running at 1.4 GHz that had fallen out of use because of sluggish windows issues. Did a full install of Peppermint 8 Respin 64 bit and now it is working beautifully. I like how it works with my gmail and chromium bringing in all my bookmarks etc. I’m also using it with my Dropbox account...which took a bit of figuring out but finally got it working.... I really like Peppermint and now am wondering if I would gain much by upgrading this old laptop from 2 gb to 4 gb Ram? Anyway, thanks to the Peppermint folks for a great disto and I’m looking forward to learning more about Peppermint and Linux. Thank you in advance for any help I may receive from this Forum. Personally I'd say "DO IT" .. you can never have enough RAM .. though the law of diminishing returns generally applies above 4GB unless you're a particularly heavy user with lots of apps running at the same time, or gamer, or.  run large databases, etc.

I'm happy to hear the Peppermint 8 Respin is bringing your old Dell Vostro laptop back to life.  If you're like me, and are always keeping mutable tabs open, then having a computer with more memory sure does help.

Just wanted to introduce myself to you guys .

Me , well I'm a retired 67 year old English man who decided to leave his home shores and head for a warmer climate and adventure . After living in several country's I finally ended up in a small rural village on the Thailand / Cambodia boarder , where Ive now been for 15 years.

 I came across peppermint OS by chance when searching youtube , and decided to give it a try and I must say so far I'm very impressed  . I look forward to learning more from other members of this forum and hopefully give some thing back one day .

I'm wondering if I may be the oldest forum member here

Ah good old Blighty , now that brings back fond memories . I was fortunate enough to retire from working at age 42 and decided to leave good old Blighty and look for adventure and  do some traveling .  To cut a long story short I did never return back home so its over 25 years since I stepped back on England's green and pleasant land . I often wonder how much things have changed since I left .

Thailand is an interesting place for sure but having said that I seem now to be reminiscing more and more about life back in England, may be its an age related curse . May be one day I will return to my home town where when you meet some one they say '' Ey up me duck y'alreet '' can you guess where my old home town was
