Hi - not sure where best to post this.

I have been running Peppermint 6 without issue until Sunday. Following the running of updates Firefox no longer loads but gives me the crash reporter. If I try to run Firefox safemode the panel for safemode pops up for a fraction of a second and then goes to the crash reporter without allowing me to check either option. In addition the software manager no longer works after entering the password. The package manager does still work.

I then installed Peppermint 7 (most recent ISO) onto another hard drive. I checked the box to install updates as part of the installation. Firefox on the new installation and the software manager worked. I could also instigate firefox safemode from the terminal. I then saw there were more updates so installed them. Following the update Firefox goes into the crash reporter and the software updater no longer works. Trying to enter Firefox via safemode also does not work and I don't even get the brief appearance of the options box.

I have also tried 4 other browsers on the broken Peppermint 7 installation and cant get any of them to work successfully. They either fail to work at all (Chromium, Midori) or crash after opening (Konqueror, QupZilla).

For the moment I have a fall back to another Peppermint 7 installation without the further updates on a 3rd hard drive. I use removable hard drive caddies so can run each of the 3 installations after a reboot. The fall back is not ideal because I would prefer to keep up to date. I am assuming that there is a lack of compatibility between one of the recent updates and my PC but don't know how to resolve the problem.

on the broken Peppermint 7 installation, can you run:
Code: [Select]
pluma /var/log/apt/history.logthen look down the bottom of that log for the section where the updates at broke thing were installed .. then post that section here, so we can see what got updated.

Do you know how to boot an earlier kernel ? .. it would be interesting to see if booting into the earlier kernel (on the broken PM7) fixes the issue.

When you turn ON your PC, hit amd hold the "Shift" key .. you should be presented with the GRUB menu.

At the GRUB menu, use the down arrow key until "Advanced" is selected and hit the "Enter" key to enter that submenu .. then at the next screen select the top option (already selected) that should be the 4.4.0-51 kernel .. with that selected, hit "Enter" to boot that earlier kernel.

Once booted, running:
Code: [Select]
uname -awill show you if you're currently using the 4.4.0-51 kernel .. if you are, test Firefox.

If I enter Software Manager via the menu prompt I am asked to enter my password. After entering the password after a few seconds the prompt panel closes but nothing else happens.

I don't see any error messages after entering the commands above.

Here is the content of the terminal

Hi clivere, how's it going  ;)?  For future reference, could you please remember to encapsulate terminal outputs with the Insert, Code # function.  For extra long outputs, please use the Spoiler, Sp function.  Don't combine the functions.  Only use one or the other  ;).  These preserve the original format of the output.  This makes it easier for future visitors to relate to their own issues.  These functions are found in the forum editor, above the,  :-[ Embarrassed and  the :'( Cry emoticon respectively.  Use the Preview button to see how it'll look in the forum.  This time, I've done it for you - many thanks  ;).
Backup! Backup! Backup! If you're missing any of these -  you ain't Backed Up!
