WINE is a huge pill.  If there's not a Linux version of something, I definitely don't need it because I don't care for WINE.  (I prefer beer)  Though, I don't really run into many tasks these days where I can't find an acceptable Linux program for.  There are some things, like video editing, where I very much prefer the free offerings in Linux over the ones in Windows.

I agree completely wherever possible I will only run native Linux programs even if it's less functional or polished than it's Windows/proprietary counterpart so long as I can get the job done, but that said as hard as I tried I could find no alternative to Quickbooks which currently is the only Windows program I have running in wine and fortunately it runs well in wine

IIRC at one stage Corel had a team working on Draw 9 for Linux (even had a beta I think) but like the impotent wimps that saw them fade in Windows, they never followed through.

yep they did... http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/reviews/2573/1 One might wonder if its still downloadable eh?

Are there any Windows-only programs that you miss in Linux?

Yes... for photo archiving & management I miss IrfanView http://www.irfanview.com/ maybe one day, when I feel more energized, I'll try running it in WINE...

Have you seen the original date for that article spence ? (November 1, 2000)

That's precisely the one I was talking about .. they never released it.

I go back and forth, usually it just winds up that I want to play a game that I haven't played for a while and it's a Windows only game.  While everyone is entitled to their opinion, it's my personal opinion that running a program from a folder in Peppermint is nowhere near as insecure as running anything from a full Windows boot.  WINE won't spy on me.  Also, when I'm not using it, it sits there dormant, as opposed to Windows, which does all of that stuff that you don't know about in the background.  But, as I said, that's just my opinion and everyone is entitled to theirs.  In most cases, though, I just stick with the more than ample Linux offerings in terms of software and games, or play games on my consoles.

The only game or close to a game I do is "flight Simulator X" and I still have that on my disconnected from the internet Windows XP "Flight Simulator X" tower.  8)

I've thought about doing something like that too, as I have another computer and the games I'd like to play are older anyway.  Though, I would still need a copy of Windows to install and even the thought of buying that OS makes my stomach churn.  But, it is an option I've considered.
