I was wondering if anyone could give me some instructions on installing virtualbox.  I tried through the software manager and encountered problems, also tried through terminal and error reads:

Hi dknydisdkny, how's it going  ;)?  For future reference, could you please remember to encapsulate terminal outputs with the Insert, Code # function.  For extra long outputs, please use the Spoiler, Sp function.  Don't combine the functions.  Only use one or the other  ;).  These preserve the original format of the output.  This makes it easier for future visitors to relate to their own issues.  These functions are found in the forum editor, above the,  :-[ Embarrassed and  the :'( Cry emoticon respectively.  Use the Preview button to see how it'll look in the forum.  This time, I've done it for you - many thanks  ;).

You downloaded totally the wrong version .. post the output from:
Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep virtualbox
Can you also mention the version of Peppermint you're using, and whether it's 32bit of 64bit ?

If unsure, post the output from:
Code: [Select]
inxi -Fz

Okay, run these commands in sequence:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove --purge virtualbox-5.1
then
Code: [Select]
sudo pluma /etc/apt/sources.list
and add this NEW line at the bottom
Code: [Select]
deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian xenial contrib
make sure that's the ONLY line in there that mentions "virtualbox".

SAVE the file and close pluma.

Back in the terminal run:
Code: [Select]
wget -q https://www.virtualbox.org/download/oracle_vbox_2016.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -
then
Code: [Select]
wget -q https://www.virtualbox.org/download/oracle_vbox.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install build-essential dkms virtualbox-5.1
once installed, go to this webpage
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
and click on the blue "All supported platforms" text at the end of the line that reads:-

VirtualBox x.x.xx Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack  All supported platforms

to download the extension pack, then just double-click it to install .. it should automatically fire up virtualbox as part of the installation.

Got it working.  However, i'm having problems installing the extension pack and guest additions through the software center.  It completes, but tells me there was a network error which didn't allow the download to finish properly.  When I go back in, it shows as installed.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled both through software center getting the same network error each time.  Any ideas on how to solve this?

The extensions pack .. as I said you simply download it from Oracle, then click on it to install.

I'm not quite sure what you're doing with the quest additions (which will already be installed in the host) .. you need to install them IN THE GUEST OS, what is the "Guest" OS ?

Fire up Kali in Vbox .. then on the top Vbox menubar go to:-

Device > Insert Guest Additions CD image

Now in Kali, open the file manager and you should see VBOXADDITIONS on the left (this is a mounted virtual CD image) .. click that, then double-click the "autorun.sh" script to run it.
