ot: USA: Cox Email Servers? DFEOJM?
« on: December 07, 2016, 04:28:14 pm »
After migrating all of my usual email contacts to use @cox.net email for me instead of @live.com... I'm having trouble downloading any e'mail (pop3 nor imap arrive) from Cox... anybody else west of the Mississippi also having trouble of late. Cox used to have separate settings for folks east or west of the Mississippi... so ...

Well it's responding to a ping
Code: [Select]
ping -c 5 imap.cox.net
PING imap.cox.net (146.20.147.247) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 146.20.147.247: icmp_seq=2 ttl=46 time=117 ms
64 bytes from 146.20.147.247: icmp_seq=3 ttl=46 time=96.0 ms
64 bytes from 146.20.147.247: icmp_seq=4 ttl=46 time=94.1 ms
64 bytes from 146.20.147.247: icmp_seq=5 ttl=46 time=92.7 ms

--- imap.cox.net ping statistics ---
5 packets transmitted, 4 received, 20% packet loss, time 4011ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 92.740/100.122/117.574/10.145 ms
but repeated runs shows the return times are unstable (varying wildly), and about 50% of the time there is packet loss (as seen above).

Dunno if that means much from the UK though.

Hello spence,

We need VinDSL to see this thread.  Yeah, it's down for me too, but, then again, I'm east of the Mississippi also --but further west than PCNetSpec!  ;D

But, seriously, let's hope VinDSL sees this thread.  ;)

PS

I've dealt with Cox before --in San Diego.  I have mixed feeling about the company, but the company seemed to me to be overextended.  :-\  But according to Is It Down Right Now? --yeah, it's down.  :(

that doesn't tell you anything ... the imap.cox.net mail servers won't be using http (it's not a website) so they will appear "down" to that site .. they are using imap.

That site also reports imap.gmail.com and pop.gmail.com are "down", but they aren't.

That site is just reporting that they didn't respond to an "http" request .. imap and pop3 mail servers won't ;)
(you'd get a similar response from me if you gave me a shout in swahili)

[EDIT]

See if you can telnet in
Code: [Select]
telnet imap.cox.net 993
then
Code: [Select]
LOGIN username@cox.net your_password
I seriously doubt if you'll get in, but it should give you an idea if the imap server is up.
(the above could be completely wrong .. it's been years since I "telnetted" into mail servers)

Thanks, PCNetSpec, and, now, I don't know if VinDSL will be able out to help with this particular issue either.  From what I'm gathering Cox Communications is spread throughout different metropolitan regions of the country.  I'm not sure if Arizona is even in a part of that mix.  Apparently Cox sold off some of its holdings in parts of California too.  Cox Communications is a bit of a hodgepodge on the map.

Cox is indeed part of the mix in Arizona, so much so that its the only option available for internet in large swaths of the state, aside from pricey, sketchy & slower satelite providers. AZ telephone companies seem to have ditched all internet providing options. Cox is the only provider in my neighborhood.  Century Link creeps closer & closer, but their speeds are much slower.  USA needs to get rid of the ISP hegemony....
