Peppermint 7: Converting Three Monitors Into Four Displays
« on: November 23, 2016, 10:34:22 pm »
Thought some of you might find this interesting ...   8)

I've been running three displays for awhile now, in a vertical config.  It worked well enough, but I still found it necessary to use two (virtual) desktops, for the things I do.

I can only run three monitors on this Dell OptiPlex 7010 SFF (small form factor) machine, due to its limited size and modest power supply output.

After thinking about it for a few months, I decided to replace the top 24" wide monitor with a 29" Dell Ultra-wide.

It worked out perfectly !  I effectively have four 19" displays now, even though, in reality, it's still only three monitors.

Setting it up was a breeze.  Gotta love Peppermint !

Here are a couple of screenies ...

I use 'LXRandR' to accomplish this, but 'nVidia X Server Settings'' makes for a prettier picture.

This is a screenshot of my desktop using the most excellent 'Shutter' app - with 2 x Chromium, and 2 x Firefox open.

Hi VinDSL,

Very Nice  :)

Do you also physically have the displays laid out like that.  Is the 29" wide screen on a wall mount to get it physically above the other two screens ?

Regards Zeb...

Do you also physically have the displays laid out like that [...]

Yup !  I'm using a Mount-It! MI-783 triple monitor stand - wanted to conserve my desk space for other electronics.

LINK (picked at random):  https://www.desertcart.ae/products/1865660-mount-it-triple-freestanding-monitor-stand-for-widescreen-monitors-up-to-24

Built like a tank !  I'll probably modify it a bit (shorten the lower arms a few inches) now that I've settled on the monitors, but that's the basic config.   ;)

EDIT

BTW, I'm not a gamer, but I checked out this 21:9 video on YT.  Looks spectacular on this monitor, in full screen mode !
