Hi,

My experiences in the classroom (entry level college/university and upwards) have seen a definite trend in the last twenty years, and it is not reassuring. There is a growing fraction of students who not only have deficits in critical thinking skills, integrative thinking skills and logical thinking processes, but -- and this always amazes me -- fail to understand the difference between cause and effect!  :-\

I cannot explain it, but it is perhaps somewhat/somehow related to PCNetSpec's idea: in this case the "idiots in society" that he mentions are appearing in ever greater numbers in the college and university classrooms and laboratories. This makes "their drivel" more apparent to me (as one who does not use Facebook or Twitter -- both of which must be extremely alarming, from what I hear and read from all of you and my friends and colleagues).

I am sorry to say that I suspect the lower levels of our school systems are letting poorly prepared students pass through in ever greater numbers. Some of the reasons for this I have already mentioned in my previous message. No doubt there are additional reasons as well, some of which I know about or suspect, and definitely others of which I know little or nothing about.

Regards,

-- Slim

I suspect that there are more college grads in Europe than the US, and, if I'm right about this, I suspect that trend will continue.  As first I began concentrating on what was behind the concept of an extension that would flag fake news.  Now I'm looking at the behavior that can result from these fake-news stories.  It's not always pretty.  No matter a person's politics, this story has been tough to avoid.  Fake news is really becoming a serious issue here, and people are getting this garbage online --on their computers, tablets, and inappropriately-named smartphone devices.

[T]here are a lot of people happily running Peppermint ICE which hasn't been receiving ANY updates for a while now .. and I personally would STILL consider that MUCH more secure than any version of Windows with up-to-date AV/Anti-malware ;)

Perhaps "trust labels" will eventually replace extensions such as the Fake News Alert extension found in the Chrome Web Store.

Yeah, I read about that.  I've now added Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough to my loooooooooong list of news media phonies.  ::)

Hi Folks,

Haven't posted here before, but as they say there is a first time for everything. Hope you don't all pile on me because I am not a current Peppermint user, but I like to follow the forums anyways to see the latest. Tried installing it before but to no avail. Bought a distribution at one time. But that is a story for another time. Now my spare computer is in storage. I'm going to now dodge the spitballs.  :'(

Regarding fake news:
I do think fake news is a problem, but it is rather hard to define what fake news is. Is it only false news? or could it be less obviously propaganda or ideological in nature? For what it is worth I am suspicious of this term fake news. One persons fake news can (possibly) be another persons fact. One wants truth to be reliable and without bias. But when one talks about news, the other writers slant can change the meaning of the event without presenting any contrary facts.

Honestly I wonder if the "real" news would refer to organizations that are established and these types of organizations are often beholden to the status quo. We all know how the behemoths have been complaining about lost revenue because of the internet. Other new and growing organizations with accurate reporting find themselves already at a disadvantage.

Now that I've said all that I'll crawl back into my hole. Hope this helps somehow. Oh yah i'm gotta hunt for that computer in storage and see if it still works.
Thanks

Well, see... you came to the right, or -- if you'll pardon the pun -- the 'write' forum.  ;D

In the real world, I represent newspaper, magazine, and electronic media workers -- been around 'news' my whole life -- 4th generation, if you will.

The all-encompassing term 'fake news' is as good as any. It means everything and nothing, all at the same time. I judge 'fake news' to be anything designed to purposely mislead readers/viewers. To others, it's simply 'any news' that doesn't agree with their point of view.

It's all a matter of perspective, really.  But, when something is done to mislead, that's where I draw the line. To that charade, I would include almost 100% of advertising, which drives/funds the whole thing.

Personally, I think extensions/add-ons like this are the digital equivalence of sticking one's head in the sand - that's all. Ignorance (based on the word 'ignore') is bliss, you know?

The whole "fake news" discussion bores the sh*t out of me, there's ALWAYS been fake news, or more accurately "people intent on lying to you for whatever reason".

It is (and always was) up to the reader/listener/consumer to check facts for themselves .. or risk being duped.

The only reason "fake news" is in the news at the moment is because those bitching about it have some agenda (the established press playing protectionism, or politicians trying to deflect blame or redirect attention) .. so really "fake news" is "fake news" :)

Basically if you're too dumb to spot a lie (or satire/irony, or a hidden agenda by someone you'd normally trust that's putting a slant on their opinion) .. stop listening to others. Nothing new here.

[EDIT]

BTW (deleted per removal request), there's no requirement for anyone to be running Peppermint here, every Linux user (or prospective Linux user) is welcome  .. we're all friends here and nobody will pile on you simply for not running Peppermint .. you're most welcome here my mate :)

Peppermint, this is a lettered man who posted here!  See, many, many moons ago (and I won't say how many) I attended college with, and soon become friends with, (deleted per removal request)   That said, I had no idea yesterday that a seeming innocuous thread was about to awake a giant from his slumber. :o  I'm sure glad it did, however. :)

Welcome to Peppermint forum, (deleted per removal request).  May the day soon come when our excellent distribution runs ever so lightly on one of your machines!! ;)

Thank you, PCNetSpec.  Two of the many things I love about this forum is that it is both inclusive and civil.  And it is civility that I see lacking on many sites of the Internet today.  :(

Thank you my friend perknh. Also thanks to PCNetSpec and VinDSL for the warm welcome. I am really glad to have you as a friend PCNetSpec.

I won't say anything more about Fake News. I think I have muddied up the waters enough already  8)

I hope nobody misinterpreted my last but one posting as anything personal, it was meant in very general terms .. I just don't 'get' the whole 'fake news' thing, there's nothing new happening it's simply being 'invented' as a means to an end.
