How to install WPS Office
« on: November 15, 2016, 02:46:31 pm »
WPS Office is a great alternative to LibreOffice for working with Microsoft Office documents (.doc .docx / .xls .xlsx / .ppt .pptx)

Okay, let's get on with the install...

Go here:
http://wps-community.org/downloads
and depending on whether you're using 64bit Peppermint or 32bit Peppermint download the latest version that ends with either

amd64.deb for 64bit Peppermint
or
i386.deb for 32bit Peppermint

Once downloaded, simply double click on the .deb you just downloaded and select "Install"

You'll then find 3 new items in your menu under the "Office" category.
WPS Presentation
WPS Spreadsheets
WPS Writer

But if you open these now you'll get a warning:-

Some formula symbols might not be displayed correctly due to  missing fonts Wingdings 2, Windings 3, MT Extra.

So to install the missing symbol fonts, open a terminal and run these commands in sequence:
Code: [Select]
sudo mkdir -p /usr/share/fonts/wps-office
then:
Code: [Select]
cd /usr/share/fonts/wps-office
then (to download the missing symbol fonts from the Peppermint server):
Code: [Select]
sudo wget https://peppermintos.info/misc/wps_symbol_fonts.zip
then:
Code: [Select]
sudo unzip wps_symbol_fonts.zip
then:
Code: [Select]
sudo fc-cache -vf

WPS applications should now open without the warning.

What was I thinking?

No .. the dropbox link is now dead.

I could probably put the file somewhere else, but to test the install I'd need to get the latest version of the WPS office .deb, which I can't currently get because
http://wps-community.org/downloads
appears to be offline at the moment.
(500 - Internal Server Error - The server at wps-community.org is taking too long to respond)

AFAIK, WPS Office for Linux has been 'on hold' for over a year.

I'm alternately using Office 365 (online), MS Office (dual-boot), and LibreOffice 6.1 (local install), depending on the machine that I'm on,

Personally, I highly doubt that WPS Office for Linux is coming back, anytime soon.  :(

Okay it seems the site is still there, it just takes an inordinate amount of time to load (so times out in most web browsers) .. once it does load you can see these download links for what's currently the latest version (dated 2019-03-09), which work:-

wps-office_10.1.0.6758_i386.deb
SHA1SUM: a33b6a9b786b168918eb82b88bcce597512f6b7e

@alynur

I'll test these tomorrow, and post instructions if you still need those additional fonts (or anything else).

I installed the 32-bit ver on this Dell Dimension 3000 doorstop. Works fine.

When I was surfing their website, I ran across a Snap:

http://kdl.cc.ksosoft.com/wps-community/download/6758/wps-office_10.1.0.6758_amd64.snap

Need to be on a 64-bit machine, to test that ver, though...  ;D

Did it not moan about missing fonts on first run ?

BTW, who the heck wants a snap if there's a deb :)
(or even if there isn't ;))

Found the additional WPS fonts over here: https://www.mediafire.com/file/r1z4jb5dini6891/wps_symbol_fonts.zip

Be careful what you click on. There are lots of landmines on that site (if you aren't running an ad blocker)  :)

I placed the unzipped WPS font files into: '/home/.fonts' and restarted. Bingo!

Knew you'd appreciate that  :D

First thing I do, on a fresh install, is purge Snap and Flatpak... LoL

If they're required I'll host em somewhere and post instructions tomorrow :)
(so there'll be no need to visit that site)

I downloaded and installed from the link you shared PCNetSpec, when I open the writer i do get the missing fonts message. I was trying to remember why I was interested, oh yea, my nephews are always complaining about Editing windoz docs on my computer. I'll wait til you subscribe the cure.
What was I thinking?

Okay, I've now copied the missing fonts archive (wps_symbol_fonts.zip) from my dropbox to the Peppermint server.

so to install the missing symbol fonts, open a terminal and run these commands in sequence:-

Create a directory for the fonts
Code: [Select]
sudo mkdir -p /usr/share/fonts/wps-office
then make that directory the current directory:
Code: [Select]
cd /usr/share/fonts/wps-office
then download the missing symbol fonts from the Peppermint server into that directory:
Code: [Select]
sudo wget https://peppermintos.info/misc/wps_symbol_fonts.zip
then unpack the archive:
Code: [Select]
sudo unzip wps_symbol_fonts.zip
then refresh the font cache:
Code: [Select]
sudo fc-cache -vf

WPS applications should now open without the warning.

I've also changed the wget command in the first posting in this topic.
