What does the graphics stack do? [SOLVED]
« on: November 13, 2016, 08:03:15 am »
Hi interested readers,

I have installed kernel 4.8.x on machines running Peppermint 6 and Seven without doing anything to the graphics stack. I have had no problems. Am I just lucky? Is the graphics stack only relevant for people using proprietary graphics drivers or what?  :-\ My machines do not use any special drivers -- just those that get installed with the standard Peppermint installation.

Regards,

Yep just lucky .. they obviously built the 4.8 kernel packages with the same xorg version in mind, but that won't necessarily always be the case.

eg. Upgrading Peppermint 6 to the 4.4 kernel series without also upgrading the graphics stack is liable to cause you problems.

Hi All

Then I must be lucky too as I simply upgraded PM 7 to 4.8.7 and at the end ran
Code: [Select]
sudo nvidia-xconfig

Rebooted and it was all good  :)

Hi PCNetSpec,

Soooo ... now I'm beginning to get a better picture of this: it has to do with the version of xorg that is used when building the kernel packages. I had no idea -- but lots of luck!!  :D

Thanks,
