Compiling your own Kernel

are there any benefits to compiling your own kernel ? 
why do people do it ?
and out of curiosity how long would it take ?

I used to compile all my kernels.  It's fun, and I sort of miss it.





Other than the triumphant feeling of listening to Mozart, and gaining a certain amount of bragging rights in various communities, I don't see much point in it.  8)
