Nemo Delete / Recycle Rubbish Warning!
« on: October 28, 2016, 05:15:45 am »
Aaarghh!!  :o
I've done one of the most dangerous things in any distro that has the function.
Accidently deleted files using the delete (with the red cross which bypasses the recycle bin)
Fortunately I have a backup.

For those who don't have a backup, here is a walkthrough to hide that function within nemo (file manager):

1. Open Nemo (File Manager)
2. In the menu at the top: Click Edit> Preferences
3. The 'File Manager Preferences' window will pop up.
4. Within this windows click on the 'Behaviour' tab at the top.
5. At the foot of the window there is a sub menu titled 'Rubbish Bin', untick the following within this section:

Include a Delete command that bypasses the Rubbish Bin

and

Bypass the Rubbish Bin when the Delete key is pressed

then close the 'File Management Preferences' window.

You will now find that if you right click a file within nemo, only the 'Move to Rubbish Bin' is visable.
This will save you the frustration of losing files accidently deleted.  ;)

I struggled with whether to enable the "Delete" right-click context menu item out-of-the-box but eventually decided this is Linux, it should do as you tell it .. I figured that as "Move to the Rubbish Bin" was right next to it in the context menu it would be fairly self evident, and "Delete" prompts with a stern warning dialog anyway ;)

Cool tutorial though for those that want to disable it :)

It was one of those knee jerk reactions (or finger/mouse reactions) that caused it.
Realisation was immediate.. :o  >:(

Ouch !!! :(

Were you not prompted to verify the action with:-

Are you sure you want to permanently delete "name of file/folder"?
[Cancel]  |  [Delete]

?

There's a bit of a clue in the "permanently" ;)
(in honesty we've all done it at least once .. but then we've all emptied the Trash and regretted it too)

No, there wasn't a prompt after pressing delete, the folder/ files just went..
I take it there should be then?
I'm not using it now but, it's still worth warning about.

If you weren't prompted for confirmation before deleting, at some point you must have removed the tick from this in Nemo preferences because it's ticked by delault:-

WARNING: You are logged into reality as 'root' .. logging in as 'insane' is the only safe option.

What is highlighted in your pic has always been ticked on my system.
I always want confirmation of any delete.  ;)
I will try and replicate with dummy files..

Ok just made two dummy files and deleted using the 'bypass rubbish bin' and the confirmation does come up upon deletion.
Strange, this didn't happen before when the accidental deletion occurred?? Otherwise I wouldn't have done this warning thread.
The files/folders just vanished.  :-\
No matter now as it seems to be working as intended.
