Acer travelmate 2410 [2002] won't shut down
« on: October 24, 2016, 07:37:29 am »
Hi folks,  :-\
I have my old acer lappy which I wanted to install a quick Linux build, I settled on Peppermint 5, It took ages to install [fair enough its an old machine]

But after  waiting over half hour [that's longer than M$ has ever been] it still did not switch off... had to pull the plug, and took a long time to boot in. also chrome kept dropping out,

is it a compatibility problem ? are there known issues ? tried search but it didn't find anything

Suggestions please

To help us help you, ALL new requests for technical support should include basic system information.

If you haven't already done so, please open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run the following command:
Code: [Select]
inxi -Fzthen copy what was returned in the terminal and post it back here.

This was an automated response but please don't ignore it, providing this information now is highly likely to save time for both you and any prospective respondents and aid in the diagnosis of your problem  .. Thanks in advance :)

Note - Please rest assured there is nothing in the output from that command that could be construed as a 'security risk', the '-z' option makes sure of that by filtering out your MAC address.

I would love to give you a cut and paste of the inxi commands but at the moment, with the browser failing to hold a connection I am not able to,

the basic spec of the lappy can be found at http://www.laptopdirect.co.za/download/acer-travelmate-2410-series.php

the only modifications are upgraded ram and a usb 11n dongle.

Okay it probably makes sense to try figure out the wireless issue first, but

a) Can you start another topic for the wireless problem (with a descriptive title)
and
b) Well still require output to diagnose the issue .. can you not connect via an ethernet cable to post output ?
(or copy the output to a text file .. then copy the text file to a machine you can post from)

Just spen half hour trying to explain further my problems only to be timed out by your server.

the wireless works [it was bought specifically for linux compatibility]  its the chrome browser that wont lock and hold to sites,

the lappy last had mint 9 with lightweight desktop which is now out of support and worked without a hitch, new mint editions are not compatible with the the old Celeron M processor so Im told.

will need to go and buy a 30 mt cable later in the week for the ethernet.

its the chrome browser that wont lock and hold to sites,

Not sure I understand that .. a browser doesn't "hold onto" a website, it simply downloads and uploads from/to a URL.

But if you mean the forum session is timing out, you have 2 options

save the post you're editing as a draft every now and again
or
when you log onto the site make sure to tick the "Always stay logged on" tick box

Hi Mentha x Piperita,

If you find yourself having problems that you think are related to your browser, then install and try using a different one. There are numerous ones available in the repository. Firefox might not be your favorite, but if your problem really is browser-specific, then it is only logical to try a different one.  ;)

One thing that I sometimes do is write my posting in a simple text program (such as the one that comes with Peppermint in the standard installation) and when I am finished, I select all of the text and paste it into the forum's editor window. That way you are certain not to time out before you are finished.  8)
