Is this an optical disk, or a LiveUSB ?

optical drive, for this laptop will not boot from liveUSB... just tried once again... I also tried using the p6 liveCD... same problem....

I was able to fire up gParted 0.11.0-7. I created a larger SWAP partition. Didn't change my liveCD experience. Chosing to "try P7" also returned the compression error. Given that I'm getting the same error message whether using the p7 & p6 liveCD's I think it might be best to declare the Qosmio EOL as far as future peppermintOS upgrades are concerned.

If I had to guess I'd say the optical drive is EOL .. have you got an external CD/DVD drive ?

The other option would be to swap the HDD into another laptop .. install Peppermint 7 .. then swap the drives back.

I do have an external backup drive, but it doesn't accept drives with this sort of connection. I'm perfectly happy declaring this one EOL... I keep it around for sentimental reasons. It's sound system surpasses the other two laptops, but the thing overheats like crazy after a few songs. I also don't wanna mess up the other laptop which this one's harddrive would fit in. So I think I'll stick with EOL reSOLVED

I meant an external USB CD/DVD drive.

I'm currently assuming your internal CD/DVD drive is misreading the DVD.
