Resetting video driver nouveau [solved]
« on: October 16, 2016, 12:25:29 pm »
I spent a few hours installing Pep7 on an older PentiumD computer and everything went fine. I have a weird monitor (Acer x193w) with a resolution of 1440x900. I have dual boot with windows and windows can't even get me that resolution, only 1366x768 but Pep7 can with the nouveau driver. Anyway I install a bunch of programs without issue but after rebooting now the resolution is stuck at 1024x768, no more. I tried the Nvidia driver (304.131) suggested and this one get me 1366x768 like in windows. I don't why I lost the proper resolution on my monitor.

Is there a way to restore it ? I found this command  "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" but it doesn't do anything.

TX

Abit IL9
Nvidia 7300GT
Pentium D

To help us help you, ALL new requests for technical support should include basic system information.

If you haven't already done so, please open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run the following command:
Code: [Select]
inxi -Fz
then copy what was returned in the terminal and post it back here.

This was an automated response but please don't ignore it, providing this information now is highly likely to save time for both you and any prospective respondents and aid in the diagnosis of your problem  .. Thanks in advance :)

I think that's the question, how to restore the nouveau driver.

To accomplish this, go to the Additional Drivers tool.  (I think it's under the System menu, I'm at work right now)  Select the nouveau driver and wait for it to do its thing.  Reboot.  You may not have to do anything else, but odds are you will. If your screen is all wonky after rebooting, go into the Synaptic Package Manager and search for nvidia-304.  Remove any remaining installed nvivia-304 packages.  Make sure you don't remove anything else Nvidia.  Reboot again and you should be back to the nouveau driver.

Ok I think I figure it out. It's the monitor. That's an very old monitor that someone gave me to see if it works. I want to use it with my other Acer (X183H) monitor for a dual display setup. The Nvidia settings panel can't figure out what it is now, so that's why it limit the resolution. I noticed also that in windows, it says it's a non-plug and play monitor but can recognized the other, even older Acer. It may have work before during the initial setup. Looks like that monitor stop sending monitor infos (DID). There was also messages with the Peppermint boot disk that DID was not functioning.  I change the cable but with no effect.

I return the original Acer monitor as the main one. It's recognize correctly and PEP works fine. The Nvidia panel also identify it correctly. So that old monitor is finally re-route to where it was supposed to go, recycling, end of story.

Thanks ! I learn something else today...
