Tip: speed up your Intel wireless chipset
« on: October 15, 2016, 03:45:44 am »
There's a new how-to on my website, namely a way to increase wifi speed for wireless chipsets from Intel. At least when it's a (reasonably) modern chipset. This is how:

(item 9, right column)

Have fun!   :)

Interesting !

Is this a kernel bug  :-\

Code: [Select]
╭─vindsl@Boogaloo-5 ~
╰─➤
dpkg -S $(modinfo iwlwifi | head -1 | awk '{print $2}')
linux-image-extra-4.4.0-42-generic: /lib/modules/4.4.0-42-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/iwlwifi/iwlwifi.ko

d. Does this hack create stability issues for your wifi? Then undo it with the following terminal command:

sudo rm -v /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi11n.conf

Then reboot. All should be then, as it was before.

This would indicate it's NOT a bug.   It's a speed vs. stability compromise, yes ?

Fair enough.  I can live with that ...   8)

Thx for posting !

Yes. But the nice side is, that only a few chipsets suffer from that wifi stability issue, after the hack is applied.... So in most cases this is only beneficial.   :)

For the cases in which wifi stability problems do arise, I have supplied the how-to for undoing the hack.

Tonight I did a new measurement on speedtest.net: the speed difference was almost 100 %, so it nearly doubled!

Without the hack (click on the image to enlarge it):

With the hack (click on the image to enlarge it):

Note that the hack doesn't appear to influence the upload speed; only the download speed.
