What did Peppermint 4 have that helped autostart apps ? .. it had lxsession-edit (which can be installed in peppermint 5 too, though it's function is already duplicated in lxsession-default-apps) but that didn't allow you to ADD autostart items, just enable/disable a few system services)
In fact Peppermint 5 has lxsession-default-apps (menu > Preferences > Default applications for LXSession) where you *can* manually add autostart items as long as you know the command to start them.
Granted, there's no GUI kinda "drag'n'drop this to autostart it" .. but you only need to know 2 folder locations to achieve this, same as you did in Peppermint 4 .. I'd say the Peppermint 5 system is slightly more powerful
