Well it's broken..
Done it again and once in the system I had a look at the update history to find what changed from earlier today.
The only one thing has remained after the removal of kernel 4.4.0-42.44.

linux-libc-dev 4.4.0-42.62 which was linux-libc-dev 4.4.0-38.57 (info from update history in mintupdate)

Is there a way to get linux-libc-dev 4.4.0-38.57 back as it was working fine?
Have had a look at the forced update in synaptic but no joy.
This was an automatic update. (standard peppermint way)

ok, 'Error A: Later version already installed' when run in GDebi Installer.

If it is not this, what could it be?
The only thing that has changed today is the kernel then reverting back to the previous version.
Yesterday, no new installations or other updates?!

In my systems case, I'm beginning to think that kernel level 5 updates isn't such a good idea as this happened around the time of the last kernel release IIRC
If it aint broke.. :(

Well as I expected, all is well again after reverting back.
At 1st boot up this morning and a reboot, no issue whatsoever.
Deffo a kernel issue (32bit anyway) as everything is back to what it was 2 days ago.
Thereagain, maybe it's just the 32bit version as most are on 64bit versions of PM7..who knows?  ???
Time for a Timeshift snapshot me thinks.. ;)
In my instance, a cautious approach is required for future level 5 kernel updates (ignore in mintupdate!)

I've had C lib updates kill 32-bit installs more times than I care to remember, in Ubu testing.  That's probably why it's rated lvl 5.

That said, I don't remember it ever puking a 64-bit install.  Still, it gives me the chills, every time I see it arrive in the updates.  It's one of those things you stick in the back of your mind, out of self-preservation.

Just saying ...    ;)

Yeah,
live and learn, true what they say, 'once bitten...' but in this case twice within a month through no fault of my own.  ???

Unfortunately I need a 32bit OS for legacy hardware support (Canoscan 650U) as there are no 64bit drivers for it as far as I know from my last intensive online search.
I'd happily dump the 32bit in favour of the 64bit PM7 if i knew the scanner worked...PCNetspec, any info on this?  ;)

Can you start a new topic with a descriptive title please acer .. if we find a solution for the scanner in 64bit this is precisely the kind of topic where future searchers will benefit from a (SOLVED) tag ;)

When posting please also post the output from
Code: [Select]
lsusb
with the scanner connected via USB and switched on.

Can you also mention whether it's a USB or wired/wireless scanner.

TIA :)

[EDIT]

Or is there already a topic and I've just forgot ?
