Pre login issue (Solved)
« on: October 01, 2016, 10:44:20 am »
Not having a good laptop day today.. ???

Symptoms:
Switched laptop on, plymouth splash displays and doesn't proceed any further (just before login) for over 5 minutes,
no ssd activity at all..freezes.

1st time this happened earlier this week, I done a hard shut-down (power button for 5 seconds or so) and it was fine on restart.
I've had to do this 3 times just to log in (eventually) today.
Stumped?!

Any ideas? Help appreciated..
TIA

On a more positive note, complete re-installation of PM7 on the AO533 netbook for SWMBO without a glitch earlier.  :D

To help us help you, ALL new requests for technical support should include basic system information.

If you haven't already done so, please open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run the following command:
Code: [Select]
inxi -Fz
then copy what was returned in the terminal and post it back here.

This was an automated response but please don't ignore it, providing this information now is highly likely to save time for both you and any prospective respondents and aid in the diagnosis of your problem  .. Thanks in advance :)

When it appears to have frozen, is there anything displayed on screen if you hit the "Esc" key ?

Are there any flashing lights on the keyboard ?

and just as a matter of interest, is there any particular reason you chose the 32bit version of Peppermint 7 ?

Hi PCNetSpec

Yeah the first thing I tried was using the ESC key and other combination keys (three finger salute) CTRL-ALT-DEL, and any key combo, absolutely no response from the system.
No flashing lights not even from the laptop SSD led indicator.  ???
Hard shutdown was the only way out.

Then was faced with grub menu upon start-up and chose the default grub option, and started ok the first time it did this.

32bit PM7 is primarily for a Canon Scanner (Canoscan 650U) which didn't provide 64bit drivers for windows/osx or linux last time I did research on it.

Next time it happens, hold Alt+SysRq and whilst holding them type r-e-i-s-u-b leaving a couple of seconds between each keystroke.

did the machine reboot ?

if not it may be a kernel panic .. though that's normally signified by flashing keyboard lights (caps lock light / numlock light)

Hi PCNetSpec,
Thanks again, the system booted no problems earlier.
Have these instructions at hand (written down) for the next-time it happens..(or not?)

This seems to have disappeared or fixed with an update.
I'll mark it solved for now and revisit if it happens again.

ok, this happened again today.
Only difference this time was a kernel update via mint update manager earlier today.
Kernel 4.4.0-42 (level 5) update installed then switched off laptop to go out.

Came back to laptop a while later, switched on and froze again at plymouth splash.
Tried the above key combo and screen kept scrolling..cryptoswap stuff continuously for ages.....
Hard power off and booted into grub.

After a couple of attempted boots on 4.4.0-42, I gave up and reverted back to 4.4.0-38
I've also removed kernel 4.4.0-42 from my system via mint update manager/ kernel update manager.
switched laptop off and on and all is good again.  ;D

Yup, /Home folder as per initial set-up
Kernel Panic?

[edit] is 4.4.0-42 the 4.8 kernel?

No it's the 4.4 kernel series .. we can try installing a different kernel if you want, or we can just flag the 4.4.0-38 kernel as the one to automatically boot into and wait to see if the next kernel update fixes things ?

Thanks for the confirmation, I'm just gonna leave as is for now and as you say, wait for the next kernel update.  ;)
