Unknown hardware in additional drivers
« on: September 23, 2016, 03:55:28 am »
Hi all,

I was wondering if someone could explain the following that is contained in the `additional drivers` tab of Software and Updates:

Code: [Select]
Unknown: Unknown
This device is using an alternative driver.
[*] Using Processor microcode firmware for Intel CPUs from intel-microcode (proprietary)
[ ] Do not use the device

I would like to know if this means that there is some hardware on my machine that isn't getting utilized. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

UPDATED INFO

Here is the output of
Code: [Select]
inxi -Fz

To help us help you, ALL new requests for technical support should include basic system information.

If you haven't already done so, please open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run the following command:
Code: [Select]
inxi -Fzthen copy what was returned in the terminal and post it back here.

This was an automated response but please don't ignore it, providing this information now is highly likely to save time for both you and any prospective respondents and aid in the diagnosis of your problem  .. Thanks in advance :)

It likely means you haven't chose to load the intel microcode for your CPU but the system can't verify it's covered by the microcode.

You have 2 options...

a) choose the intel microcode if it's being offered in additional drivers (AFAIK it won't hurt, even for intel cpu's that don't take advantage)
or
b) ignore it .. if everything's working why try to fix a non existent  issue.

Personally I'd probably go with option (a) .. a lot of the core2duo's had upgrades via microcode .. if your particular core2duo isn't one of them it'll just ignore the microcode.
