Cannot access wifi on fresh installed HP Mini 110
« on: June 09, 2014, 10:09:53 pm »
Hey guys, brand new to peppermint, but not to Linux. I've used Ubuntu for a long time, and got the urge to try something new. I'm thinking that there is no driver support built into Peppermint on this HP Mini 110, because it doesn't even show up in my connections. Ethernet works just fine, though. I'd like to get it working if anyone has any ideas, as I really like how smooth and refined this OS looks. Open to any ideas.

Appreciate the help in advance, thank you!

Hi voltaikvulpine, welcome to the forum.  :)

If you're using Peppermint 4 go to...
menu > Preferences > Software & Updates > Additional Drivers (tab)
I believe your netbook sports Broadcom wifi and, if so, install the STA Braodcom driver offered.

If you're using Peppermint 3 to go...
menu > Preferences > Additional Drivers to see your options.

NOTE:  It can take a while for Software & Updates to open so be patient

Try what mac suggests first .. "additional drivers" may automagically offer the b43 driver for installation, but if it's still not working after trying that....

I'm 99.9% sure the mini 110 has a Broadcom BCM4312 LP-PHY adapter that requires the low power (lpphy) firmware to work:

Whilst connected to your router with an ethernet cable, open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-lpphy-installer
then unload the b43 driver:
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe -r b43
and reload it:
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe b43
Did wireless spring to life ?

If that doesn't work, please post the output from:
Code: [Select]
sudo lshw -C network
and
Code: [Select]
lsusb
and
Code: [Select]
lspci -vnn | grep net
and
Code: [Select]
rfkill list

Dear friend,
I'm new to linux, but I love it. I've tried Ubuntu, Easy Peasy, Lubuntu, Xubuntu and othr ...buntu distros. I tried peppermint because I read it was a an ubunt's great grandchild (Ubuntu- Lubuntu- LXDE- Peppermint). I had the same trouble with my wifi. However, the problem wasn't new, beacuse I had it since I tried ubuntu for the first time. After walking this path many times I found an answer to our HP Minis 110's question: Where to get a solution for WIFI? The answer: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupport/Machines/Netbooks.

Just look for HP Mini 110 and follow the instructions. I hope this will help you. Best wishes,

O
