Experiment: Windows 8.1 holding off Windows 10 [Concluded]
« on: June 11, 2016, 12:31:10 pm »
Hi
I have reset my Lenovo Laptop back to Factory settings. Lets see how long I can hold off Windows 10 as a normal user.
Even during the reset, once ititialising, one the the first things it asked me was to Upgrade to Windows 10.  Only 1 options, barely readable in the dodgy font colour they chose. "Do it Later" . On the next screen I got to "Decline the upgrade" again in that barely readable font and very small.

When we get to the screen "Do it now or Tonight" or what ever it asks, we know clicking on the X in the top right hand corner NOW means Accept.  I will attempt to open "Task Manager" and kill the process and see if that stops it.  I will keep you updated on how it goes.

Regards Zeb...

I find Peppermint holds off Windows 10 exceptionally well. :)

Still, it's an interesting experiment.  Let us know if it works.  I've read that Windows 10 eventually forces its way onto your system, though I often wonder at the tech level of people saying that.  I know you know more about computers than the average user, so I trust your results over some unknown (to me) person's results.

Whenever I bring my Win7 drive out of retirement, it hasn't got the driver for my wifi dongle. Best firewall I've ever had ;)

Round 1: reboot PC ask for it to do updates and it presents you with an upgrade to Windows 10  :-\

Hang on - didn't I just 2 minutes ago express "No Thank You" very politely I might add. Underneath that Window is - Show all available updates.
next screen: 253 important updates and not one of them ticked but I notice 1 "optional" update is ticked for 2,933.7MB. Hmm :-\ that sounds re-markedly like the 3Gb it warned me about when declining it .  UNTICKED ...   brb I just need to check if they have sneaked it in anywhere else amongst the 253 Important Updates...   ...   ...   5 hours later with sore eyes and a frazzled brain trying to read all those meaningless (to mere mortals) KB123456789 update notes...[Yeah right... as if] - I click select all and wait for it to download and install 1844.3mb. I did do a double take to make sure it had not re-ticked the Windows 10 upgrade option and it had not...  CYA soon for Round 2:
Regards Zeb...

Round 2: Knowing this is going to take a long time I go off on other adventures that take me longer than I thought.  I come back to my Laptop to find it semi comatose.  What!  I hear you say.   DOH! Stupid me I forgot MS Power management settings that even when on a Laptop with the Power plugged in. It turns the display off after 15 mins, powers down the hard disk after 20 mins and then puts the whole thing into suspend cos nothing is perceived to be happening.  BUT hang on a minute, surely Windows 8.1 KNOWS it is doing updates and Yes... some of those updates can take a while to download, so to put the computer to sleep through inactivity is just pure STUPIDITY of the "Nth" degree. SO
WAKEY WAKEY and get on with the job MS, you have slept long enough - around 70 mins at my guestimate.
We are now on 83 of 253 updates installed. Lets hope the machine KNOWS its doing something and doesn't fall asleep again ZZZzzzZZZzzz UH! phew that was me not the laptop, which is now on update 86.
Round 3: to follow

What's wrong with just using sommat like "Never10" ?
(which doesn't actually install anything .. it just sets some registry guff)

Hi
There are a number of solutions out there. I was interested to view this from an average user perspective who just gets bombarded with requests to upgrade and I also wanted to see if the final assault IS where clicking the Close X is the same as answering yes.

Like scifidude79, I am a little sceptical of the recent "Stories" doing the rounds that it actually happens ?

Regards Zeb...
ps it also stops me fiddling with my Peppermint install and borking it  :o

pps the updates have just finished SIX hours later and the machine is rebooting. Are MS actually slowing down updates for other versions of Windows to give you the impression they are not as good and that you really should upgrade to 10. In all the years of working with Windows machines and with the number of re-installs I have done to Windows 7, I have NEVER has an install and first update take this long.

Dunno about 8.1 but the last Win7 install I did took over 24 straight hours to install and fully update (and that is not an exaggeration) .. each round of updates wouldn't even START downloading for a few hours.

I'd say they're definitely prioritising Win10 updates/downloads .. Win7 never used to take hours just to start getting updates, it's always taken a while but not hours.

Round 4:  and there we have it folks... no sooner do I open Firefox for the first time when along comes Windows 10 upgrade window - ON TOP AND PERSISTENT. Even clicking on windows behind and it's there - No minimise button and no option to say no.  It's either do it now or do it later.  So I opened up Task manager and ended the process. Now that may not be something your average user would think of. So lets see if it pops up again or it still takes being killed off as a yes.

Cya at Round: 5

Edit Round 5 started already and MS comes out fighting.  I want to reboot my laptop. I have three options. Sleep, Update and shutdown or update and restart.
SERIOUSLY !! What happened to freedom of choice.  WOW They really do mean business.   ctrl+alt+del and sign out.  At login screen I get a warning bottom right in yellow
Windows update
Restart your PC to finish installing updates. Automatic restart will occur in 1 day.

So there you have it folks.  Your average PC user does not stand a chance. They are FORCED to update by MS.  Confirmed.

So - I am going to sign back in and see if I can get it to sod off with the help of GRC and never10.

Regards Zeb...

and we have the KNOCKOUT punch landed by the recommendation of our very own Guru PCNetSpec

Never10 over at GRC stops the fight in Round 6. With MS not getting up off the floor.

I also used the very good GWX Control Panel which, does the same thing as Never10, just not so elegantly and further it will also help remove the offending already downloaded files from your computer and clear out any residual lingering stench from your upgrade cache.

Now off I go to enjoy my nag free Windows 8.1 laptop.......    SERIOUSLY!!!   Nah, off I go to install Peppermint OS and unleash the full potential of the laptop at hand :D

I hope you enjoyed this little experiment... and if you didn't... C'est La Vie - no one made you read it  :P

Regards Zeb...

LOL :))

FYI, Never10 can also remove the already downloaded upgrade files .. there's a button in there somewhere for that ;)
(though as you can imagine I aint got it in front of me, so can't tell you exactly where the button is)

All that just to not have an "upgrade" you don't want to the newer version?  Boy, M$ sure is getting stupid about this, aren't they?  The really crappy part is, that whole thing took less than a day.  In less than a day, you were practically forced to "upgrade," or use that Never10 thing.  ::)  Your average computer user would never stand a chance against all that.

Too true. My grandmother called me the other day complaining about not being able to turn off her laptop. At first I thought she had stumbled upon some form of malware, but after the conversation progressed I realized she was talking about that pesky Windows 10 update.  >:(

Sadly they can pretty much do what they want when they have such a monopoly.

I'd imagine there is something illegal about this, as their forced update is literally disabling some peoples' computers.  MS may make you sign that BS agreement saying you don't own the OS, but you definitely own the hardware.  Of course, the issue is finding someone with the legal clout and money to take then on.
