What's the output from:
Code: [Select]
ls -a /usr/share/applications | grep -i war
and
Code: [Select]
file /home/pshem/Games/WarThunder/gui/icon.png

Code: [Select]
pshem@PiLenovo ~ $ ls -a /usr/share/applications | grep -i war
nemo-autorun-software.desktop
software-properties-drivers.desktop
software-properties-gnome.desktop
software-properties-gtk.desktop
WarThunder.desktop
pshem@PiLenovo ~ $ file /home/pshem/Games/WarThunder/ui/icon.png
/home/pshem/Games/WarThunder/ui/icon.png: PNG image data, 256 x 256, 8-bit/color RGBA, non-interlaced
I realized it's actually ui, and not gui a few minutes after posting it was gui. I've been substituting it ever since, so I don't think that is the problem

Okay so what exactly is the problem ?

the launcher displays without an icon ? .. where does this happen ? (when the launcher is on the desktop, when the launcher is in /usr/share/applications, how about in menu > Games ?)

Does it display an icon if you make the launchers executable
Code: [Select]
sudo chmod +x /usr/share/applications/WarThunder.desktop
and if you still also have it on the desktop
Code: [Select]
sudo chmod +x ~/Desktop/WarThunder.desktop
?

If not, it's probably a problem with the icon.png itself .. can you host it online somewhere so I can download it and take a looksee (it would probably be better as an SVG if it's 256x256 as a PNG of that size won't scale well to icon sizes

After changing it to executable, the extension was hidden  :)
Unfortunately, it does NOT show up in the Games section of the Wisker Menu.
The icon that is shown above it, is the generic executable file icon, with a gear on a 4 tile background. The icon named icon.png I'd like the desktop shortcut to display is

Run these commands in sequence
Code: [Select]
cd /home/pshem/Games/WarThunder
then
Code: [Select]
wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/31525164/warthunder-icon.svg
then
Code: [Select]
sudo pluma /usr/share/applications/WarThunder.desktop
and make it read:
Code: [Select]
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Name=WarThunder
Comment=War Thunder Launcher
Exec=/home/pshem/Games/WarThunder/launcher
Icon=/home/pshem/Games/WarThunder/warthunder-icon.svg
Categories=GTK;Game;
SAVE the file and exit pluma

Now run (and don't worry if this next command fails):
Code: [Select]
rm ~/.local/share/applications/WarThunder.desktop
Does WarThunder now show up in the menu at

menu > Games > WarThunder

?

Code: [Select]
pshem@PiLenovo ~ $ rm ~/.local/share/applications/WarThunder.desktop
rm: cannot remove '/home/pshem/.local/share/applications/WarThunder.desktop': No such file or directory
Is that the failure I was supposed not to worry about?

Unfortunately, nothing changed. The icon on the desktop still doesn't show up, the Games directory only shows a few Ice sites. warthunder-icon.svg was succesfully downloaded and appears in home/pshem/Games/WarThunder. Maybe it's a file permissions problem, ie. icon files need different permission settings?

Forget the one on your desktop for now  .. let's concentrate on the one in the main menu first....

Have you tried logging off/on again .. or restarting the panel ?

After logging off/on, does the one in the whiskermenu (menu > Games > WarThunder) show up ?
if not, does the WORD WarThunder show up there, but just without an icon ?

I've rebooted the whole laptop. WarThunder does NOT show up in Games, nor in the All categories in the menu

Run:
Code: [Select]
sudo pluma /usr/share/applications/WarThunder.desktop
It opens empty for some reason, and the icon stops working. So I close it, ordering changes not to be saved.

This file was created on my desktop upon double clicking the desktop icon a moment ago, WT did not start:

After the crash, the document opened, containing unaltered code(earlier version). I replaced it with your suggested version, and volia, WarThunder, with the icon, appeared in the menu, under the games tab. I suppose it will change the desktop icon upon restarting. ;D
Can you attempt to explain what happened, PCNetSpec? :-\

Maybe WarThunder is re-writing the file at /usr/share/applications/WarThunder.desktop every time it is run.

Try putting a copy at ~/.local/share/applications which should take precedence....

Run:
Code: [Select]
pluma  ~/.local/share/applications/WarThunder.desktop
when a blank file opens, make it read
Code: [Select]
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Name=WarThunder
Comment=War Thunder Launcher
Exec=/home/pshem/Games/WarThunder/launcher
Icon=/home/pshem/Games/WarThunder/warthunder-icon.svg
Categories=GTK;Game;
SAVE the file and exit pluma

Is it in the menu now ?

It is in the menu just fine without doing anything new since my previous post. It even has the icon there.
One last cosmetic detail I'm after is that it has kept the generic application logo on the desktop, but I assume this will change when the desktop is restarted(probably by PC restart, I don't know how to deal with Xserver comandline restarts yet)

No it probably won't .. delete the launcher from the desktop, then run:
Code: [Select]
cp -v /usr/share/applications/WarThunder.desktop ~/Desktop/
then
Code: [Select]
chmod +x ~/Desktop/WarThunder.desktop
