May we give ourselves a little time, say,  a few days to a week, before I mark this thread as (SOLVED)?

Makes sense to me :)

PCNetSpec,

According to my wife, there has been no disconnecting from Wi-Fi today at all.

Therefore I must now consider the problem of her computer's disconnecting from our home's Wi-Fi solved!  :)

PCNetSpec, do you think we'll have to do the same procedure that we have done here for Peppermint 5 too?

Thank you very much,

perknh

"PROBABLY" .. but I can't say for sure as they *may* have updated the ath9k driver, they may not.

But it's an easy enough fix to apply if it is necessary ;)

I had the same problem on my Acer Aspire 1 [D257] after going to Peppermint 5, 4 worked just fine.  And of course found this post.

@PCNetSpec, I applied your 'fixed", and also dis-engaged the propriety driver for my Broadband Wireless Controller, and so far, my problem appears solved as well.

Thank you.

My wife's computer -- the 64-bit Toshiba Satellite Laptop -- is having the same problem all over again with Peppermint 5.  And that's after we got things solved with Peppermint 4.

I don't want to start running commands in the terminal until I get an a-okay from PCNetSpec.

I still consider my knowledge of Linux sophomoric at best.

Being foolish and wise now makes me a dangerous egg!

Oh man Perknh .. what is the worst that can happen?

I do have a few backup computers, even a newer Chromebook and a real new Chromebox [got the same day Peppermint 5 hit].  At any rate, this little netbook is my go to computer, and work horse, and goes to work with me.  Dual boot, figure if I really screw up I can just re-install Peppermint.

So we all know, Peppermint is my go to OS.

ronj1950, I hear you.

I've installed Peppermint 5 on four hard drives at this point -- two XPs, one Toshiba Satellite Laptop, and one external hard drive connected to a USB 3 port within another Satellite Laptop.

My wife's problem is that her computer -- the Toshiba Satellite Laptop -- runs on 80% Wi-Fi strength, but PCNetSpec got her computer humming along fine on our Wi-Fi after I ran some of his commands, and that was when she was running Peppermint 4.  But, at the time PCNetSpec wasn't sure about the status of the ath9k driver.

Here's my problem.  I don't even know what an ath9k driver is, and, secondly, I don't know if it has been updated, or upgraded, since Peppermint 5 came out.  I figure PCNetSpec may know that info now.

That's why I'm waiting to hear what to do.  Things may have changed internally with Peppermint 5.  I just don't know.

My wife's computer is not keeping a strong signal when watching YouTube movies.  We had the same problem with Peppermint 4, but somehow PCNetSpec solved the problem.  My guess, but I'm not sure, is that the ath9k driver has not been up updated or upgraded, but I thought it would be wise for me to ask before I start doing crazy things with her computer.

Incidentally, she never loses signal strength when she watches YouTube movies on her Android tablet -- which is another Linux device.  I figure it's a driver problem inherited from our Ubuntu parents that has yet be solved.  But that's just a guess.

Peppermint is our go to OS too -- and we were crazy about Peppermint 4, even without the security updates.  That thing was as solid as a rock.

Grrr to Ubuntu for not pushing out those security updates.  If they had, we would have never have left Peppermint 4.  I have never used a better OS in my life than Peppermint 4.

ronj1950, you may have inadvertently solved the ath9k driver riddle for us.  I just need to make sure.

Truth is, I'm tired of installing OSs these days.  The four installations I've mentioned is why I'm treading lightly here.  I need to give myself a break.

Thank you, ronj1950.   We'll see if you've stumbled upon the solution here.

If it's the same PC as you started this topic about, just upgraded to Peppermint 5 .. YES, apply the same fix.

We can always undo it if necessary ;)

Thank you, PCNetSpec.

I just needed the green light.  I didn't know if something unbeknownst to me had changed.

The "fix" appeared to work for ronj1950.

Will do!

 ;)

PCNetSpec, I'm wrong!   :-[

I went to take her computer and apply the "fix", and she says to me, "See, here's the problem."

I look and I see that her monitor is dimming every 5 - 10 seconds when connected to Wi-Fi.

So I never applied the "fix".  I believe her problem is not what I suspected.

I need to start a new thread.

Sorry, but I'm glad the instructions you gave me, back in our recent Peppermint Four days, is working well for ronj1950 now in Peppermint Five.

The effort did not go to waste.    :)

Thank you,

perknh

Hey Perknh,

Appears you got both your wife's little annoyances under Peppermint fixed.  Ironically, under version 4 my netbook display would dim too after about 10 seconds because I had that 'dim screen when idle' active.  Deactivating that solved that.  Seems display is just fine with 5.  I always took it to be more a hardware/driver problem then the operating system.

And wi fi connection [outside of hotspot itself acting up] is very stable now.

Don't mind tinkering with the operating system setting at least on this netbook.  As noted I have others to go to, and believe I can always re-install 5 on this machine if I really cause it to crash.  Small price to get away from MS Windows and all that.  I kinda have my Love talked into converting her real old desktop on XP to Peppermint.

And yea, PCNetSpec has helped me out lots, either directly, or like here, with you.

Regards,

Ron

Point out it's her moral responsibility to get off XP ;)

Anyone still using XP are not only risking their own data .. they're putting everyone else on the net at risk.

When her PC becomes part of a bot net, it will likely be used remotely to attack other PC's and servers, probably with out your knowledge until you get a nasty letter from your ISP.

XP should not be used online any more .. indeed I'd be happier if Microsoft released one last update that disabled the XP network stack. :)

Hey PCNetSpec,

Oh I agree based on what I have read, and ironically, put that same fear into her [again] yesterday.

The PC in question is off/idle/not used at all.
