File server for Windows users (SOLVED)
« on: June 06, 2014, 10:09:30 pm »
Hello

I have a couple of computers with PM 1, 3, and 4 as well as a desktop with windows 7.  I can see the windows shares just fine on the Linux boxes, but have not figured out how to see the Linux shares when I am logged into the Win 7 box.  I have seen a couple of solutions,  but they were geared towards straight up Ubuntu, and I appeared to hit a dead end when I tried them.  Can you vector me to a tutorial?

I am sure I have to share them out with samba or perhaps something else,  but have not seen how to do that.  I ultimately want to replace a creaky old XP file server at my church with Peppermint but I need to ensure I can do it.

Thanks for your help.

Hi sdgengineer

You'll need to have Samba installed on your Peppermint PC to share files,

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install samba
then for the gui interface

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install system-config-samba
Peppermint 4 has a useful networking metapackage that installs most of the necessary packages needed for networking including Samba

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install peppermint-networking-pack
Once installed open the Menu>System Tools and you should find Samba there, setting up the share is quite self explanatory but if you need any further help post back here

Good luck

If you can keep your head while all around are losing theirs then you're not quite grasping the situation
