Video driver help, please (solved) [updated info]
« on: August 20, 2016, 05:08:14 pm »
I thought I'd try Peppermint on my desktop, too. Installed it and got a blank screen on boot. I added radeon.modeset=0 at boot and it booted but now I need to set it to use the proper driver and I could use some help with that, please. The other distro on this computer uses the open source driver for radeon and that works fine but I don't know how to set that with Peppermint.

Here is the graphic card info from lspci -v:

Not sure what you mean by "proper driver" .. you're already using the radeon driver, you just disabled kernel mode setting for it  ???

Well then something isn't working correctly. It's set on a very low resolution and has no other resolutions available as choices. I use the open source driver on another distro on this same machine with a 1440x900 resolution.

Do graphics work properly in a Live session from a LiveUSB without disabling mode setting ?

No, not from the live Peppermint disc.

Can you say which distro/version *did* work ?

Sure, Netrunner 14 is on another partition. I've been using it on there for many months, maybe a year. I didn't have any video issues on install with it.

ETA: When I booted from the live Peppermint DVD, I did have to disable mode set to get it to boot and it wasn't set to the correct resolution then either, but it wasn't low resolution and it did allow me to set it to the correct one. Not after installation, though.

I take it you've run a full system update, then tried removing radeon.modeset=0 ?

and have you tried the original kernel WITH radeon.modeset=0 .. and does that allow you to change resolution ?
(which theoretically should replicate the Live session)

Yes, I updated and rebooted without the radeon.modeset=0 and it will not boot. I'm not sure what you mean by original kernel? I tried before updating and after with the radeon.modeset=0, if that is what you mean. Cannot change resolution.

I'll see what I can dig up, but I'm afraid it'll have to wait until the morning .. it's getting late in the UK.

Any ideas yet? I found today that if I reboot into recovery mode I am able to change the screen resolution to the correct resolution. Still doesn't work on a normal boot, though. I just get a blank screen that way.

I hadn't forgotten, I'm still looking :)

Can you post the output from
Code: [Select]
inxi -G
from both a normal boot, and when booted into recovery mode .. so I can see if the drivers changed.
