Unable to boot from usb or dvd(SOLVED)
« on: August 18, 2016, 12:00:19 pm »
Hello Peppermint people. This is a fresh install of Peppermint 7 which I installed over Peppermint6.
I am trying to create a DATA partition but I am unable to boot from either usb or dvd after selecting whichever from boot menu. When I try to boot from dvd it just boots into installed version and when I try to boot from usb it just freezes and I end up having to power down. It is booting up into the hard drive okay, kind of slow, but at least I'm here. Any ideas?

If you booted from a USB to install from, there's no obvious reason why you can't boot from it now. Are you sure it's freezing, bearing in mind that it will probably take a lot longer to boot than a HD will?

Is there any particular reason why you installed the 32-bit OS?

Hi murraymint, actually I installed P7 using a dvd, that same dvd doesn't boot, I'll have to check if my machine will boot using it. The usb is a P6 version that I tried so I could modify partitions in gparted. I figured 5 minutes was way too long for it to be booting.

OK, I generally don't use DVDs for that purpose, they're just too slow. I'd recommend using a trusted method to make a new USB with P7 on it (something like Rufus or Etcher, not Unetbootin).

I should have mentioned that the usb gets to the option screen and after selecting try peppermint live and clicking enter is where it stalls. Both devices boot fine into my machine, I don't think it's a device problem, has to be something in the bootloader or whatever it is that controls that kind of stuff. While I've got your interest murraymint, I have P6 on the usb and I would like to add P7, do I have to reformat the usb disc in order to install both versions using a program such as you recommended?

You would generally only have one OS per USB stick, yes. There are ways to put more on but they're fairly complicated and I only know of ways that require Windows to set it all up.

It doesn't really matter for this purpose whether you use Peppermint 6 or 7, it's more important to create the USB stick with a good program to give it the most chance of being bootable.

Use the USB Stick Formatter app in Peppermint to format the USB stick .. then use the USB Image Writer app (also in Peppermint) to create the LiveUSB

Why do people keep suggesting third party apps when we have them built in :-\

Hi PCNetSpec, the usb stick I'm using I made with the peppermint usb image writer, I'm sure it is fine since I can put it into my computer and boot into live session with no problem. It's in my niece's computer that I have a problem as I described above. I doubt rewriting the usb stick is going to make any difference. I don't understand why when I go to boot menu and choose to boot from the dvd, which has peppermint 7, will not boot but boots into the installed version. This is the very same dvd that I used to install P 7 into this computer. And I checked it also in my computer and it boots fine.  :-\

If it's that old that it can't boot from a USB stick, you're going to have to either try burning another DVD and if the DVD drive still won't read it, get hold of another (possibly external) DVD drive.

Either that, or remove the HDD from your computer .. replace it with her HDD .. install Peppermint .. then swap the drive(s) back.

When you burn the new DVD, make sure you burn it at no faster than X4 speed  ;).

I ran across this post while looking for a discussion on slow boot and realized I never closed it out.  Sorry bout that. It turned out that the front panel and the optic writer of this computer are inop and the usb stick would work properly if installed in a rear slot. Again, sorry.  :-[
