Thanks Andy. I am using the graphical utility now with PcNetspec patch but it's always good to know how it's done in a terminal. Probably the last command (clean ...) has to be done manually after anyway, I presume. Not only for cleaning kernels either.

[UPDATE RELEASED]

mintupdate 4.6.7+peppermint1 has been released for Peppermint 7 that fixes this issue.
(the fix is not necessary for Peppermint 6 which will stay on version 4.6.7+peppermint)
