No way to adjust mouse cursor size?
« on: August 10, 2016, 09:54:06 am »
Hi all,

I recently switched from Mint 17 to Peppermint after seeing some reviews for it in the /r/Distroreviews section of reddit, and I must admit I am thoroughly impressed. Everything has worked without issue, the theming is slick, the peppermint settings panel is gorgeous, the ICE tool intriguing, and the combination of the best bits of all the various DE's and Mint's updater and store is just superb.

The only thing I seem to be having an issue with (unless I'm just completely missing something) is that there appears to be no way to easily adjust the size of the mouse cursor in the various settings panels. Is there something obvious that I've overlooked like an idiot?  :-\

Maybe it would be easier to just install a large cursor theme .. such as:-
https://www.gnome-look.org/p/999574/
?

Be aware - Once changing the theme, you'll probably have to log off/on before some apps (such as Firefox) will pick up the changes.

BTW, Welcome to the forum :)

I had considered a larger cursor theme, but I was rather hoping I'd be able to stick with my personal favourite, which is based off the Amiga OS cursor. There hasn't been any issue with other apps displaying the new cursor once changed, it's just slightly to small for my liking. Though I guess there really is no way to adjust the size within Peppermint? :(

Out of curiosity, does the Kernel selection tool work for you, at all?

Thanks for the response and warm welcome, PCNetSpec! :)

Hi Incandescent,

Welcome to the forum! Could you please divide up your original posting into several, each containing just one question/problem? That makes it much easier for other people to find solutions to problems by using the search function and they see immediately if a problem has been solved or not.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Incandescent,

Thank you very much!!  :)

BTW, I noticed in one of your new threads that you use AMD graphics cards and have some issues (apparently) that seem to require newer kernels. Have you checked out the postings in the GNU/Linux Gaming section of our forum? I think that scifidude79 uses AMD hardware and might be a good contact to meet because he does a lot of gaming too.

No problem!   :)

I don't have an AMD card quite yet (still waiting for prices and availability to settle down), but I'll be sure to send Scifidude a message if I encounter any issues with it. Thanks for letting me know!

Hi,

As P7-user, 64-bit, I tried to alter the mouse size, but I didn't succeed. Also the mouse to be downloaded at https://www.gnome-look.org/p/999574/ did not bring a solution: nothing happened.

How to change the cursor size of the mouse? I want it to be much larger than the default one/installed mouse pointers.

Thanks in advance!

Open a terminal and run these 3 commands in sequence:
Code: [Select]
cd /usr/share/icons
then:
Code: [Select]
sudo wget https://dl.opendesktop.org/api/files/download/id/1460734373/140787-LargeCursors.tar.bz2
then:
Code: [Select]
sudo tar xvjf 140787-LargeCursors.tar.bz2
now go to:-

menu > Preferences > Customise Look and Feel > Mouse Cursor (tab)

Select "Large Mouse Cursors" from the left hand pane .. then click the "Apply" button.

Note - you may need to log off/on (or reboot) before the large cursors will appear in all applications.

Is there a way to change the mouse through the console?  I've just installed Peppermint on an old laptop and the mouse cursor is invisible...

Hit Ctrl+Alt+T to open a terminal

Run:
Code: [Select]
cp -v ~/.config/lxsession/Peppermint/desktop.conf ~/.config/lxsession/Peppermint/desktop.conf.bak
to backup the config file, then run:
Code: [Select]
pluma ~/.config/lxsession/Peppermint/desktop.conf
find the section:
Quote
[GTK]
sNet/ThemeName=Peppermix-Dark-7
sNet/IconThemeName=Peppermix-7
sGtk/FontName=Ubuntu 11
iGtk/ToolbarStyle=3
iGtk/ButtonImages=1
iGtk/MenuImages=1
iGtk/CursorThemeSize=18
iXft/Antialias=1
iXft/Hinting=1
sXft/HintStyle=hintslight
sXft/RGBA=rgb
sGtk/CursorThemeName=DMZ-White
sGtk/ColorScheme=
iGtk/ToolbarIconSize=3
iNet/EnableEventSounds=1
iNet/EnableInputFeedbackSounds=1
and try changing the two lines highlighted in red above, to:-
Code: [Select]
[GTK]
sNet/ThemeName=Peppermix-Dark-7
sNet/IconThemeName=Peppermix-7
sGtk/FontName=Ubuntu 11
iGtk/ToolbarStyle=3
iGtk/ButtonImages=1
iGtk/MenuImages=1
iGtk/CursorThemeSize=22
iXft/Antialias=1
iXft/Hinting=1
sXft/HintStyle=hintslight
sXft/RGBA=rgb
sGtk/CursorThemeName=DMZ-Black
sGtk/ColorScheme=
iGtk/ToolbarIconSize=3
iNet/EnableEventSounds=1
iNet/EnableInputFeedbackSounds=1
then click the "Save" button .. the changes should be immediate upon clicking the "Save" button.

Was this a clean install, or did you keep a home partition from another distro/version ?

Was the mouse cursor visible when booted to the LiveCD/LiveUSB ?

Thanks for the suggestion, it doesn't seem to make any difference.  And sorry, when I said "installed" earlier, what I meant was "running": I wanted to see if it works before I install it.
Apart from the cursor and being painfully slow, it seems to work, so I'm doing the install now...

ETA: I have a woking mouse cursor now, during the install...
