Yes, it is the trash-icon on the desktop, not a "trash-indicator".

The trash-icon on my laptop shows waste paper when a file or more files have been moved to the trash.
A right-click on the trash-icon shows an option "Empty trash" . When clicked the trash-icon changes it's appearence and shows an empty waste paper bin.
It is a nice visualization. You see immediately if the trash-bin is empty or not.

The trash-icon on my PC shows only an empty trash-bin, regardless how many files are in the trash.
A right-click on the trash-icon gives the option of "Empty trash" too. As long as there is no trash, the option is greyed out. When trash is present, the option is clickable and I have to confirm the deletion of the files in the trash-folder.

This is not a big problem. I just wonder why the trash-icon on my laptop behaves so nicely, showing an empty trash-bin or trash, but the same Peppermint-7 doesn't show it on my PC .

You still haven't said how the "trash icon" got on the desktop in the first place ? .. did you add it via dconf-editor or in some other way ?

You also haven't mentioned which icon theme you're using ?

Hi

If they didn't use dconf-editor I would be baffled. That's the only way I got mine to show.

It's off again now  :)

I used dconfig to show the trash-icon on the desktop.
I use the Redmont theme and for icons the  "fullest & colorful"-theme.

This is the empty-trash-bin icon:

This is the full trash-bin-icon

The icon-theme is "fullest & colorful" from here:
https://www.gnome-look.org/p/1152070/

Maybe I followed the instructions for the trash-bin manipulation from here:
http://bernaerts.dyndns.org/linux/323-lubuntu-trusty-empty-trash-menu
but only on my PC.  But I don't remember.
Edit: Just checked.  trash-cli was installed, I just de-installed it with Software-Manager.
Trash-cli is available in Software-Manager on my laptop, but is not installed.

I am sure I didn't do that on the laptop. Just installed Peppermint 7 on the laptop, moved the fullest&colorful-Theme to the folder where the other Peppermint icon themes are located and selected the theme somewhere in the settings-menu where one can select the theme too.

I was surprised that on the laptop the full and empty trash-bin-icon exists but not on the PC and thought: Maybe something is different or I got a newer version of P-7 or something.

I doubt if this is a Peppermint 7 issue .. most likely an icon theme issue (such as a missing inheritance or corrupt theme).

The index.theme file for that icon set suggests it inherits from gnome-colors-common .. so make sure you have that installed:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install gnome-colors-common
if that doesn't fix things....

Maybe you could try:-

1) on the system where the trash doesn't change, switch back to the original Peppermix-7 icons

2) delete the /usr/share/icons/fullest_colorfull directory.

3) copy the /usr/share/icons/fullest_colorfull direcctory from the working system to the broken one.

4) switch back to the "fullest_colorfull" icons

For those that are wondering -- when an icon set "inherits" from another, it means where an icon cannot be found in the theme it "inherits" the one from the other theme named in its theme.index file .. this is used mainly to keep icon sets smaller, or to have SLIGHTLY differing themes without having to duplicate ALL icons (such as numix_circle inherits numix .. therefore numix_circle is a LOT smaller than numix but requires it).

In this case if I had to guess, I'd say "fullest_colorfull" theme has it's own "trash_empty" icon, but inherits the "trash_full" icon from the "gnome-colors-common" theme which isn't installed .. but at this point that's only a guess.

Ok.
I installed gnome-colors-common  --->  the nasty empty trash-icon remains , it doesn't change to a full trash-icon when there is trash.

Next:  Switched back to original Peppermint-7 icons  ---->  the only icon which doesn not change is the trash-icon. It is still the empty trash-icon from the fullest&colorful-theme.

Next: Deleted the fullest&colorful theme on the PC and copied the theme from the laptop where the trash-icon behaves as it should  ---->  did not help either.
On the PC desktop the empty-trash-icon from fullest&colorful is still there.

As far as I understand it:  That empty-trash-icon sits there forever and doesn't  go away regardless to what icon-theme I switch.

Something is broken.

Interesting: When I click on Nemo, the small trash-icon in the left navigation bar of Nemo  behaves correctly.  It shows the empty-trash-icon when there is no trash and it changes to a full-trash-icon when there is trash.

Only the big icon on the desktop does not behave, it is hammered there in stone. I cannot delete it and  unchecking it in dconfig-editor and then check it again does always bring that icon on the desktop.

Must I install Peppermint again, hoping that this broken icon problem will be gone forever ?

When you switch back to the Peppermix icons, does the trash icon change to the one from Peppermix ?

and if so, does that one turn red when you have trash, and blue when empty ?

When I switch to the Peppermint icons, all icons change to Peppermint icons except the trash-icon.

When I do that on my laptop, the trash-icon changes to the Peppermint trash-icon and if there is trash, it appears as red icon. It behaves as it should.

If you log into the Guest account .. then enable the trash icon via dconf editor .. then change to the fullest_colorful icons .. does the trash work properly ?

In the Guest-account, the trash-icon works as it should with all  icon-themes. I tested Peppermint-icons, fullest&colorful, Adwaita, Faenza blue (they have a strange trash-icon but it shows a full trash too).

Back in my own user-account the trash-icon doesn't work properly.

Okay you probably have a corrupt:-

~/.config/dconf/user

file.

If you move that file somewhere else, then log off/on again it will be recreated with defaults as soon as you make any change .. but be aware any changes you've currently made need to be reapplied.

You can at any time replace the new version with the old one you moved, then log off/on and you'll be back to where you are now.

I did as recommended, but nothing changed.
The empty-trash icon stays there and nothing changes it  ( went through the tests switching the icon-themes to Peppermint etc.).

I think I must make a new installation of P-7.
What do you think ?

If it works in the Guest account it's definitely something in your home folder .. so maybe add a new account via "Users and Groups", make it an admin account, log into it, copy across any user docs/pics/etc. from your original account .. then when you're happy everything is working, delete the old account.

Thank you very much, PCNetSpec.

Adding a new user-account did not work for me because I certainly did something wrong.
Tired of that hassle, I just installed P-7 completely new.

Now the trash-icon works as it should.
