Kernel driver can't find nvidia/gm206/bin firmware files
« on: July 28, 2016, 12:00:49 am »
I got bored and decided to rebase P7 to the Linux 4.6.5 low-latency mainline kernel, but it couldn't find the gm206 bin files for my nVidia GT 710.

I won't bore you with the error dialog in CLI, but it wasn't pretty.   8)

The fix was to download/install the latest version of linux-firmware  from yakkety (proposed) in LP:  https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-firmware/1.158

They're going to need to fix this bug upstream, but I thought I would mention it, in case someone else is experiencing this problem.

Why would they need to fix it upstream ? .. that's not the 16.04 kernel, and it *may* be that backporting the firmware would break under the 4.4 kernel series.

I read that proper (signed) firmware support was added to Linux 4.6  and the aliases in the drivers haven't caught up yet.

Anyway, the workaround is simple enough ... ;)

"signed" would be about them working with "secureboot" I'd presume.

Still wouldn't necessarily make em compatible with an earlier kernel .. if they were, I'd expect they'd have backported em immediately ;)

Yep !  Signed UEFI/Secure Boot bin files, I assume, which is the mode I'm running P7 in ...

Doh !  That's what I get for rebasing before bedtime ...

I looked at the mainline repos again, this morning (after a pot of coffee), and there are several patches that need to be applied on top of the mainline kernels.

I wonder when they started that ?!?!?   :-\

LINK:  http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.6.5/

Take a peak at the patches.

Basically, it looks like the mainline kernels are crack builds now, if you build from source.

Okay, it's patch time ...   8)

I just installed Linux 4.6.5 using the binaries, in my (non-UEFI) 32-bit Yakkety test machine.  No probs.   ;)

I actually think that's a good idea .. not only providing the pre-patched kernel as deb files, but also providing the Ubuntu patches if you want to compile the vanilla yourself .. all in one place :)

I mean you've always been able to get the patches, but to have them available in the Ubuntu mainline PPA is a grand idea :)
