So I tried installing PM7 from a USB to another USB (a persistent). I followed a YT guide (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLCzGtHJXjU),

made a 2gb linux swap, rest into ext4. Then hit change, into ext4 and a / mount and hit install.

All seems well until the end where I get "unable to install GRUB in /dev/sda, Executing 'grub-install /dev/sda' failed, this is a fatal error".

After I OK the error I get to a error about bootloader, "not possible to install it at specified location", from there I can't do anything, hitting OK doesn't seem to do much so the installation must have crashed.

Sooo, have anyone seen it before? Did I miss a crucial step in the pre-installation phase? And the thing that bugs me, why was it trying to install anything on sda? that would be my C:\?

Thankful for any answers.

Do you see in that video at around 7:09 onwards, where it says Device for bootloader installation, he's got it selected as sdb? Did you make sure that was showing the USB stick you were installing to?

Hi

Just tried this on my laptop before I maybe get an ext SSD and it just sat there after I chose the 32gb USB3 stick  left it for 40 mins and simply would not deal with the USB drive.  It just sits there on making an ext4 partition and marking it root.

This is P7 on my Lenovo UEFI Laptop.  I can choose  /deb/sdb  ok for the grub install  and it sees /dev/sdc as the live USB and all my other partitions on /dev/sda (int 1Tb HDD)

Tried it on a USB3 slot and a USB2 slot

Booting OK from identical USB3 disk....    very wierd.

Surely won't be buying the SSD until I can get this working....

Will take another go at it later tonight :)

Regards Zeb...

Hi zeb, did you make a GPT partition table on the USB first (assuming this is for UEFI booting)?

Hmmm ok    looks like you cant follow the tutorial unless you know how to add an efi partition as well. As UEFI boot is not seeing the USB drive

So I am going to do it by Install peppermint and let it do its own thing.  which should include EFI and Swap...

Be back in 10 mins

:) Good stuff. You can make the partition table in GParted before you start and I think the installer should put the EFI partition in itself... probably.

Hi murraymint

Thanks for the tip...

Yeah - make the USB GPT and then let peppermint do it all

Yeah sorry I didn't get back sooner, my godson turned 2 today but I had time to try a install earlier today and it worked out fine. I have a tendency to multitask a lot so I probably missed that detail in the video.

Thanks for pointing it out murraymint!
