How to install Tor Browser Bundle on Peppermint
« on: June 02, 2014, 12:23:41 am »

I have unsuccessfully tried to install latest Tor Browse Bundle on Peppermint 4. I went through most of the available on line sources. The best I was able to achieve is to install Tor Browser old version 3.5. from repositories. Can you post instructions how to install Tot Browser Bundle from original package file provided by Tor home page?

By the way, a thought to consider.  What about incorporating Tor into Peppermint 5? No OS has done it yet.

OK, it doesn't need to be "installed" .. just "unpacked" and run.
(then possibly added to the menu's if you wish)

If you'd like to have it in your menu .. please provide the output from running the following command in a terminal:
Code: [Select]
uname -a
and confirm that you want the "English" version of the Tor browser bundle.

OK _tuter, are we starting from scratch here, or have you already got the tor browser somewhere on your system and it's working ?

If you already have it installed and working, can you run:
Code: [Select]
sudo updatedb
then post the output from:
Code: [Select]
locate start-tor-browser

HI  _tuter,  how are you doing?  If you are interested in using Tor, maybe you should give Tails Linux a go,  It is a Debian based distro that is built around  Tor and specifically designed to use the Tor-Browser by default.  https://tails.boum.org/ .  It is easy enough to install to a thumb drive with persistence.  This is a much better and more secure way of using Tor and the Tor Bundles IMHO.  It seems to work really well too.  I hope this helps - have fun  ;)!

more secure ?

Well as secure as Tor can be and Tails is pre-configured to work out of the box.  Being a stand alone OS keeps Tor separated from the user's prime OS so it  reduces the chance of cock-ups.  That's the way I look at  :D!

Tails is possibly more secure if used properly, a LiveCD/USB WITHOUT persistence.

But the tor browser is no more secure in Tails (with persistence) as it is in Peppermint.

Anyway, the whole 'Tails' thing is somewhat off topic .. this is a 'support' topic entitled:-

Hmm .. Dunno why there's no output from that last command then  :-\

OK, let's start from the beginning .. We're going to install the tor browser bundle into /opt, then create a menu item
(then probably delete the version you have on your desktop)

These instructions are for the 32bit version of the (en-US) TOR Browser Bundle .. if you're running 64bit Peppermint or require a different language you'll need to adjust the commands accordingly.

Open a terminal and run these commands in sequence:
Code: [Select]
cd /opt
then
Code: [Select]
sudo wget https://www.torproject.org/dist/torbrowser/3.6.2/tor-browser-linux32-3.6.2_en-US.tar.xz
then
Code: [Select]
sudo tar xvf tor-browser-linux32-3.6.2_en-US.tar.xz
then
Code: [Select]
cd /opt/tor-browser_en-US
then (to download an icon for the launcher):
Code: [Select]
sudo wget http://180016988.r.cdn77.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/tor-icon.png
OK, now to create the launcher/menu item .. run:
Code: [Select]
sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/tor-browser.desktop
when a BLANK file opens, make it read:-
Code: [Select]
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Name=Tor Browser
Comment=Browsee the internet anonymously
Icon=/opt/tor-browser_en-US/tor-icon.png
Exec=/opt/tor-browser_en-US/start-tor-browser
Terminal=false
Categories=GNOME;GTK;Network;WebBrowser;
SAVE the file and exit gedit.

You should now have a new menu item at
menu > Internet > Tor Browser

Check it works .. if it does, feel free to tidy up your desktop by deleting the version you have there ;)

Sorry PCNetSpec, but i am afraid i have some bad news :( . I have made the decision to switch to LMDE for the time being, until Pep OS 5 comes out of course. Thanks so much for you unrelenting readiness to help and give advice :D! I am truly appreciative!! But for now, i am no longer in need of you expertise.
