Wallpaper Slideshow & Desktop Picture Frame (SOLVED)
« on: July 19, 2016, 05:02:07 pm »
(My first post on this forum.)

Hello to everyone here, and a genuine thank you to the Peppermint Team.

I've just installed Peppermint 7 on two of my computers, and I am  impressed in every respect. This is a great distro. I've been using Mint Cinnamon and Manjaro Xfce for a year now after moving away from Windows completely.

I have two questions (so far).

One is how do I make the wallpaper a slideshow?

The other question: is there a desktop picture frame like the "Desklet" picture frame in Cinnamon?

I've never seen Cinnamons "picture frame", so I don't really know what it does

But as for a slideshow, why not install variety
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install variety
then use Variety to autochange your desktop wallpaper .. either from a folder, or from the web, or a mixture of the two

Thank you for the welcome PCNetSpec,
New to Peppermint but not to Linux - being using it in one form or another since 1995 or so :)

Wow, a real enthusiast then :)

I remember RH from coverdisks way back in 95 (also my first Linux experience) .. was a real pain to install.

You **had** to be an enthusiast to plough on back then :)

Welcome aboard Norton & kc1di  :)

Sounds like you've been around for awhile, kc1di.

Remember when Linux distros included 5-6 desktop widget clocks - analog clocks, timezone clocks, alarm clocks, et cetera ?

My, how things have changed ...

Variety sounds perfect - thanks.

The picture frame in Cinnamon is just a small program called a "desklet" that contains a picture of your choice. The really nice thing about it is, it always stays on top of the wallpaper, but not over other programs. I like it better than using an image viewer because it just has a minimal frame and nothing else - and once installed it keeps it's settings when you restart.

Thanks for the welcome. I should clear up what I said about using Linux. I gave up on Windows COMPLETELY about a year ago, but my first plunge into it was with Mandrake in 2001, then Kubuntu in 2008. I honestly believe Linux is so much better than Windows now that I just couldn't bother with Windows anymore. And this distro really works, and it looks great too! I might be giving away a clue as to my age, but my first computer experience was on a 1970 Honeywell mainframe with punchcards and a line printer (no monitor or keyboard). My first home computer was a Commodore 64!

Thank VinDSL  -  yep -- one of my first distros was slackware when I had to install it use about 50 floppies :)
I used Red Hat for a long time -- they Debian when RH went to Fedora.
I thought I'd give Peppermint a try and so far so good.

Sounds like Peppermint OS will be right up your alley(s).   :)

I was in the process of making a Lubuntu fork, when I discovered Peppermint.  Team Peppermint was doing everything I was doing (and more), plus they already had a network of top-notch devs and high-end contributors in place, et cetera.

Actually, I considered forking Peppermint OS instead of Lubuntu, once I dug into it, but why reinvent the wheel, you know ?

I've been using Peppermint OS since v.2 and it just keeps getting better IMO.

Enjoy !
