An editor @ BGR really hates Linux and can't hide it
« on: July 16, 2016, 03:34:43 am »
http://bgr.com/2016/07/15/linux-forums-hacked-attackers-get-user-info-sql-ptach/

The title: "Here’s another really great reason to never touch Linux"

Say what? Ok, some forum has been hacked. It happens. It happens a lot. Now it's Ubuntu's forum. I like some comments on BGR's Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/BGR) under that article.

"If Chris Mills finds a pothole in a road leading to a Toyota dealer, will he advise everyone not to buy a Toyota?

LOL!

I like the comments section of the "article" by Chris Mills the best.  One person told him being a cook at Taco Bell may have been a better career choice.  :))

Yeah, this "article" has about the dumbest leap of logic I've ever seen in my life.  The forum got hacked, so we can't use the OS.  ???  Riiiiiiiight.  I guess we shouldn't use anything, then.  You think M$ forums have never been hacked?  Apple?  We all know that a lot more than just forums have been hacked at Google.  ::)

Judging from this sentence, I think this person is incapable of doing anything other than "point and click". Since the beginning of time, Linux has always been regarded as the more secure OS out of Windows and Mac. In fact, the U.S Government uses it. As well as the U.S Navy, Spain, some banks in China, Pakistani schools and colleges, etc. My point being, all this personal and important information is being hosted on Linux machines, not Windows or Mac...

The solution is so simple:  Change your password for Ubuntu forums!  What?  Are we all supposed hightail it back to Windows now because of this?  I don't think so.

Thanks for the heads-up, Capivara.  I have now changed my password for Ubuntu forums. :)

Of course.  That way, you don't have to wait for the forum to get hacked, the hack can happen on a more personal level, right in your own system.  ::)

So much for the Ubuntu "Single Sign On" (which was supposed to protect us from this kinda thing) .. which BTW was a stupid idea, it means if they have my Ubuntu forum password they also have the login to the Peppermint PPA

Don't panic .. all changed now

but you see my point ::)

I kept my 'mouth' shut this time ...

Last time Ubu Forums got haxored, I happened to be online the exact moment it crashed and burned, and I was the first to report it via Ubu Disco.

I pretty much knew the group that did it, and how she/they did it.  The perps were bragging about it on the dark web, but the Ubu devs perceived my postings as making fun of them, and laughing at them on the Disco site.

Long story short:  When Ubu Forums came back online, a couple of weeks later - first thing the devs did was give me a one-month timeout.  LoL !   :D

Our relationship hasn't been the same ever since.  A thin-skinned bunch, they are !

EDIT

Judge for yourself: http://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/looks-like-ubu-forums-was-just-defaced/603

Was I being out of line ?  :-\

Not that I can see, but then that's the Ubuntu forum bunch .. full of self opinionated social justice warrior types.

It's what happens when your forum becomes that big.

Indeed a stupid idea but at least the passwords were hashed and more important salted, so they're not in the open... yet...

Don't know the "atmosphere" on the Ubuntu forum but after reading this thread, I think I'll keep it that way!  :)
