Can you open "Synaptic Package Manager", and go to

Edit > Fix Broken Packages

Did you get any errors (in a popup window) ?

If not, close Synaptic and try running software manager from the terminal again to see what errors it gives
Code: [Select]
gksudo mintinstall

@PCNetSpec & Iamrocket:
This topic seems pretty similar...  ;)
In my case there were only a few items not opening (and then blocking the rest from opening) in Software Manager. Eventually a NVIDIA virtual package was found to be the culprit.

PS: Not saying it's identical but it looks very very similar!  ;)

Running different OS flavors in VirtualBox, just for fun!

Installed leafpad successfully, there were no error messages in the terminal.
Pertaining to other possible broken packages, before this problem started I installed furiusiso from the software manager, and it was after that that the problem started. I uninstalled furiusiso via the terminal, but the problem with software manager persists.
