GPU driver (SOLVED)
« on: June 15, 2016, 06:27:21 am »
Hello. I have a MSI GE70 2QE Apache Pro 681 which features fairly new hardware that I believe is not well supported on the current kernel. Specifically, the GPU driver (the default one) is playing horrible on games and when I try to select a proprietary driver it doesn't work because when I attempt to save the settings, it just stays with the open-source driver. Also, the one USB port on the right does not work while the two on the left work fine. The GPU is a Nvidia GTX 960M w/ 2GB of GDDR5.

Yeah, the GTX 900 series wasn't around when Ubuntu 14.04, upon which Peppermint Six is based, came out.  If I remember correctly, there is an issue with that release and the 960.  It could be a kernel or a driver issue, I don't know if it was ever resolved.  The good news is, I believe PCNetSpec is putting the finishing touches on Peppermint Seven and it shouldn't be too much longer.  It definitely has support for the 960.  You may have to tough it out with the nouveau driver for now, or try something with a newer kernel and drivers, such as Ubuntu 16.04 or something based on it.

Hi Kyle
Is your machine UEFI - because if it is you will have to turn off secure boot or turn it to Other OS (depending on the wording of your UEFI settings)
This is what I had to do to get my GTX960 working on my Desktop PC
