Hi all,

Having great fun using Peppermint.   Had a question.  It revolves around the app GMAIL's opening page (and being able to change it).

Ok, first, the question's related pic:

I love this GMAIL standing off by itself (even if it is Chromium in the background).  If you look at the pic, when you first launch the GMAIL app, it opens up to the Google what-I-call crap page.   Then, you have to click to the top login button (like, duh) when you want to login.  Then the page becomes what is displayed on the 2nd, right side, screen (I just opened up the app twice for demonstration purposes).   Can I ask, where in the system folders is the GMAIL script and/or apt folder so i can change this nuisance so it opens directly to the GMAIL Login screen (like on the 2nd, right-side screen).  Obviously, when a person wants to open Gmail, you don't want to head to that general screen (as shown on the left of the pic).  Just an added click headache.  >:(

Thank you for any help with the above.

Hi belham and welcome to the forum :)

The file you're looking for is at
Code: [Select]
gedit ~/.local/share/applications/gmail.desktop
If you can't figure it out, just give us a shout :)

Thanks, PCNETSpec for replying!

Well, tried over an hour to get the ice app (as configured with Chromium) to open up the page to gmail and not to the main Google help/about.html page.   Inside the gmail.desktop file inside the ~/.local/share/applications/, no matter what you changed the "Exec=chromium-browser --app=https://........." to, it refused to open straight to the page of Gmail login.  And this is with a pristine install of Chromium, nothing done to it, nothing modified and/or settings set.   Even going to Chromium itself, finding the EXACT web page in the url box to open straight to Gmail login, which is......

https://accounts.google.com/ServiceLogin?service=mail&continue=https://mail.google.com/mail/#identifier

.....the Ice Gmail app with this address would still go first to the https://www.google.com/intl/en/mail/help/about.html web page.   I even deleted the Ice app and icon, and set it all again in Ice, and Chromuim still refuses to open to the "....#identifier" https address above (in italics and underlined).   I even checked inside Chromium itself to see what the home page and first page are set too, and there is no conflict there.

So, thinking Chromium is screwed up in some way in interacting with Ice, I opened Synaptics Package manager, and "completely" removed all traces of Chromium from Peppermint 6 (at least what was removable via Synaptic---even made sure to remove the non-free peppermint plugin).

I then opened Firefox 47 (which I had installed earlier), went to Google Chrome download page, got the chrome download file, and clicked on it to let it install in Peppermint 6.  Then, I went back to Ice, set everything up again, except this time with Google Chrome, and---BAMMM--right away the Ice gmail app now opens straight to Gmail login page.

I'm no expert, but there is something up with Chromium's interaction with Ice versus Google Chrome's interaction with Ice.  Yes, they are one and the same, but they are acting differently inside Peppermint (and this has been true of various other Chromium's interactions in other Linux OSes recently, as witnessed on the ElementaryOS, MepisMX-15 and other forums.   I know sticking with invade-your-privacy-at-all-costs-mothership-Google-Chrome is not ideal, in fact not wanted, but in this case there was no workaround that I could see.   Would be interested if anyone else could get it to work just using Chromium and the Ice app (changing the https address of course) as they come setup in Peppermint 6 when freshly installed.

Anyhow, thanks again, PCNeTSpec, for responding!!!    8)
